There are so many questions I have for it. Why do people watch it and not just play it? What would generate a lot of interest in a stream? How do they grow so quickly?

So many questions that do not have answers. What would this new streamer have to do o get follows. Q.Q

      >Why do people watch it and not just play it?

First, most obviously is to compare it to a sport, as DAMYABO has stated.

Second, simply playing yourself doesn't come with the memes, chat interaction, etc.
So even for non-competitive games, there's elements in streams that aren't present from just playing. This comes in many shapes and forms.

Third, you can't be playing while doing something else... Some people watch streams as background noise or a podcast.

      >What would generate a lot of interest in a stream? How do they grow so quickly?

Just from a brief analysis, being extremely good at the game will get you views.
Second, being good at a game that is popular will get you views.

If you join an e-sports team and become famous that way first, you get a headstart if you start livestreaming...

Another thing that adds to a stream's popularity is consistency in streaming. Rather than sporadic streams, those with a schedule have better viewer retention.

Also, it seems to me that most of the top streams are "high-energy". There's chill streams that get a lot of views, but on average, I feel high-energy streams have a larger audience.

There's more that goes to it, but just from a cursory thought of the environment, these are the most obvious to me.

People like watching soccer match, baseball match etc.
Having your favorite team/ athlete owning the rival team is fun and satisfying experience.
Games are more and more competitive and they are calling games E-sports now.
So, I found it interesting to watch the stream of my favorite gamer too.

      What are you streaming btw?
