So... my laptop is i7 4510 2GHz, 12GB RAM and NVIDIA 840M 4GB vram. SSD samsung evo or something (though I don't really want to use this one as it is dedicated for my work, just 64 gb one).

I had played on X3:Albion prelude on my old laptop (amd a10, forget its specs). X3 doesn't take advantage of multi core processor though. So it would be too heavy for me.

Recommend me a space sim I can run in my laptop?

FTL: Faster Than Light should last several hours, days if you actually try to get all ships. It can be run on a potato.

the specs of current gen pc would not suffice then.

Eve is not my cup of tea. I like reading about it, but playing it doesn't seem good.

If what you mean by x-reborn is x-rebirth, the game is not that interesting. If they add capital ships (give me aran and valhalla please), I would buy that one. But last I checked, no M1/M2 ships?

I would honestly suggest Freelancer which is a somewhat old classic but still imo very good. It's got a storyline, which you can follow and it opens up much of the game, but other than that you're free to do as you please, piracy, piratehunting, trading and so on.

A newer game in a somewhat similar game type imo would be Rebel Galaxy. But there's one major difference atleast. Freelancer has you in fighters & traders generally, whereas Rebel Galaxy's smallest ship you can use is a Corvette, and it goes up to Dreadnoughts . But as a type of game, they're similar.

And well if you just want something that takes place in space, Mass Effect trilogy. If you haven't heard of them, where have you been hiding?

    Similar to X series:

Galaxy on Fire 2 =similar to X series but no base (dlc of the personal base is not included on pc) have no danger of collission. Funny characters.

Old star trek games particularly Bridge Commander.

I know that FTL has already been suggested, but it's just that good. Obviously, it won't take full advantage of your specs, but it's really fun and also cheap. If you want to wait a few years, you can try getting Star Citizen right now. I know that it has a bad rep and that a lot of people will bag on it, but it's not as bad and scary as some gaming journalism sites make it out to be. Imo, the current biggest reason why it has a low chance of failing or being abandoned is Amazon. Yup, the same Amazon where you can buy anything from a hello kitty costume to a package of 1500 lady bugs for less than $20.

You see, Amazon recently put out their own game engine, Lumberyard, which is a heavily modified CryTek Engine. They've changed it enough to be able to brand it as their own engine. I don't know how the legal issues of that works, but it did. Anyways, Star Citizen was recently switched over to Lumberyard. SC used to be developed on an inhouse heavily modified CryEngine, but there's been a lot bad joojoo that's been happening around CryTek in recent days. The developers, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), switched over to LY because they could get better support and because it just worked better for their needs over the stock CryEngine, or something like that. Anyways, this is Amazon's first major foray into the game development industry. They have a lot at stake here. Whether they can make a reputable name for themselves in the industry relies heavily on the success of Star Citizen. So that's imo, the biggest reason why SC will probably not flop or fail spectacularly like No Man's Sky.

If you want to play a free-roam 'do your own thing' space sim, try Elite:Dangerous. I personally haven't played it, but I hear it's good. I mean it's a finished product, so it's got that going for it. Also, iirc, the DLC also gives you the option of going down to planets, I think. So that could be fun.

    @Claire the Lunatic hmmm

Something from the Space wolves series?
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wolves
old clunky Russian indie game, English Voice acting is a bit cringy, story a bit corny, but it's a solid game. I think its like 12 years olds, now. so your dishwasher can run it.

You may or may not like it

    PS. I only played 2 and 3
