Specifically, Malaysia. ( the other countries are unaffected atm )

    https://www.lowyat.net/2017/140590/...-following-god-fighting-game-controversy/amp/

This is just a news, really.

There's a game on Steam called Fight of Gods and it got Jesus and Buddha in it. The MCMC(M'sians Communication & Multimedia Commision) blocks Steam Store to block people from downloading it. Oh and it just happens to affect the whole Steam Shop.:blobparty:

So if anyone here from Malaysia wonder why you can't shop anything from Steam Store. There's the reason. It's becoming a controversy there it seems.

If you want to know more, just read in the link.

To add. It's blocked because of the use of contemporary religious figures

So for which diety did they close it?
After all by believing in one they deny all the rest so only was the real problem and the rest can be use in a fighting game

I kinda feel like buying it, just to beat the shit out of Jesus and Muhammad. Does that make me small-minded ?

Good question, Thor and Odin are used frequently in games and media.

Malaysia is a Muslim country, right? Perhaps a Muslim developed that game without the intention to offend , but religion is always a sensitive issue that's why it got banned.

An Islamic state with strong Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism ( with a few others ) mixed in.

If people voice their thoughts, things like these can happen. Afterall, it's religion that's being the issue here.

Smite very wisely avoids using Monotheistic religions' gods, since they are the religions most likely to get pissed off by such irreverent usage.

I agree. In our country, Christianity predominates so we are extra sensitive with our actions or words to avoid offending the Muslims.

    That's just how it is.

But it's good to see that Malaysia can be culturally and religiously diverse and still be together for decades.
Happy to be here in that regard.

Actually it is more true to muslims because as far as I remember it is prohibited to draw Muhammed and co. (one guy joked that any arab guy with turban will do)

I don't like the idea of using religion as a game, so I could understand why Malaysia did that.

It's not about who make it, or who against who, no matter what the religion is, to take a religion as a game is some kind of an insult imo. Maybe there are some people who said "come on, this is just a game!", but just so you know that the person who take religion seriously will value their gods more than their own families. It's a very sensitive topic after all

Is it just downloads that are blocked or opening the entire steam store itself is blocked? I'm not currently in Malaysia, so I'm unable to check for myself what is actually being blocked.

I'm not in Malaysia either, but I read the article... The steam store itself. You can still connect to steam and play your games. Downloads probably work fine, too - steam uses lots of mirrors for that. The store is being blocked by DNS, probably only at the IP/Domain level. Think highschool internet blocks, but even less effective. The article above literally says switching to google DNS for awhile will restore your access to the steam store. Seems childish.

The article has been updated at some point to say that Steam geoblocked the game, tho, so this should all go away soon, if not already.

In Malay culture there are two kinds of deities/gods. One is tuhan (god), the other is dewa (male god) and dewi (female god). Vishnu, Kali, Guan Yu, Nyai Roro Kidul, Thor, Isis and various local mountain and forest gods are dewa and dewi. Allah, Holy Trinity, some interpretation includes Shiva and Buddha are all placed under tuhan. Derivative works concerning dewa/dewi is fine, nobody cares. Derivative works concerning tuhan is unacceptable to Malaysians.

So if you make a game where Kali and Parvadi duke it out against Guan Yu and Jade Emperor, nobody would bat an eye. But if you make it so that Jesus fights Buddha, then it's banned. Especially considering that the fans were asking for Muhammad to be included as playable character.

Then there's also a third one, called rasul (prophets). Unlike the previous ones, rasul are just normal humans, but they are the most perfect humans. Jesus, Muhammad and Moses are among these prophets. Therefore, any attempt at visual portrayal of them will always come short and any derivative work involving them are blasphemous.
