Ugh, I hate it when I track down the main character only to find out he has 1000 harem members, so then I have to fight through those thousand. But while that happens, the main character gets a powerup from seeing his harem sweat while fighting

 

There are not enough translated BL harems for me to answer that question. We need more BL translators.

Probably most are 1-1 because most fiction is 1-1.

3 seems to be the good number, having too much makes me think of the characters as just stereotypes rather than their names

 

Personally, I don't like harems after all the shitty ones I've read.
But if I had to say, I would say 3 for it is a nice number. Not too big, but not too small either, and the MC can properly pay attention to all of them, instead of adding to his harem like he would catch pokemons...

 

If they have 10.. I'm totally out. >.< I mean how can there be any development like that ?

 

I am classic harem reader. So I think 3 is enough.
Kosaki, Chitoge, Tsugumi. No need for additional members........ If only the author could stop adding another girls!

Though there are stories with 4 girls focus too...

Too much love interest and the girls could become out of focus character. Except if you are a guy named Namidare Rekka.

It really depends on the author and how good he is at writing romance/harem and the interactions of all involved etc.
Some fail so badly that I feel more than sorry for the ladies ... and the author himself.

 

3 is good and balanced.
The most i read is 25, and i bet you don't want to have a go with them all day all long right, i mean its make you tired physically~

I think 3-4 capture targets is a good number, more than that, it gets hard to develop them properly.

It's not impossible though, author just needs to be skilled, Love Hina's author did a good job with Nejima for example.

So... The amount is: as much as the author can handle while making them meaningful and individually different.

 

A harem's only too much for me when I don't give two shits about them and can't even remember any of the girls or boys name.

MC can have 30 or more genitals gathering around him or her for all I care, as long as the person who owns that genital has a personality that makes sense in the story, relationship etc. then all is well
