    So I just googled high fantasy, and inadvertedly googled the sub genres of fantasy and now i'm wondering why humans must make everything so overly complicated and complex. So before you call this a shitpost (i'm looking at you) i wanted to compile a list of What my fellow nuffians believe to be over complicated things.

    And if your looking for a real challenge, try changing the time on an old VCR

    I'm not sure I'm doing this right but here goes:

    xianxia = chinese novel with "cultivation"
    romance = females exist in the novel
    harem = the MC is attracted to females

    And I couldn't come up with anything else of the top off my head.

    That seems like the exact opposite. Taking a complex classification and simplifying it, in the latter two cases to the point of absurdity.

    It's not supposed to be confusing. It's just that one genre can be really broad and people might like only certain aspects, not all, found in the genre and to simplify it for people we add sub genres . Thats my take on it anyway.

    High fantasy - there is magic and elves/dwarves
    low fantasy - there is no magic(there was) there are dvarves/elves etc.

    There is nothing complicated magic/no magic.

    Well reading a harem thats just an excuse to have random beautiful mindless women thrown into the story when you expected romance blows.

    Look, the number of traits defines the number of subcategories in a genre

    Even keeping it basic

    No Magic, Low Magic, High Magic; And no monsters, one monster, multiple monsters

    You wind up with 9 possible sub genre,

    Add in a third axis of no tech low tech and high tech and the number jumps to 27 possible settings.

    it's just like everything else

    You want a car? Sure, but what kind of car? Something small like the "Peel P50", something normal like a "VW Golf", something fast like a "Bugatti Veyron", ...

    As a side note, how did "vcr clock" become the metric of "hard things"

    Every VCR i ever ran across you just hit menu - Select and went to "set clock" *or clock settings* Then used up or down to change the number, hit select again and it saved the new time. Easier than pie [which is really hard to get right]

    Well to be honest, human minds works by classifying things into categories and manage to process things faster by referencing them. Theoretically, everything can be split into near infinite categories just that we choose not to, only for things that hold significant importance that we categorise them. Apparently someone found fantasy genre to be it.
