I notice how a lot of discussions seems to drop off compared a year ago, look at r/noveltranslations most upvoted are korean novels now.

Are chinese novels losing their popularity?

I wouldn't judge popularity by discussions, the majority of readers aren't exactly following reddit or forum discussions.

I think this is a correlation does not equal causation kind of situation.

There's reddit? It could be that people are oversaturated by chinese novels, and want change. Trends change

I haven't noticed KR novels becoming popular in particular? Maybe most Korean translations started relatively later, which is why they're only hitting their stride now.

    CN <- generic and repetitive.
    KN <- fresh alternative
Which begs the question. Does the translators even read what they translate? Do they realize how generic and repetitive the novel is? Take Talisman Emperor for example wtf?! I believe CN losing steam.
    my opinion.

Well you can't deny Qidian isn't spoiling it for people with their greed and 'You can't translate unless you are a part of Qidian'. Why would people translate chinese novels where its becoming restrictive rather than go somewhere else to translate.

Perhaps due to Qidian entry, there just aren't many new novel? Unlike when the CN mushrooming back in early 2015?

Actually i think because there's an influx of KR novels right now it's becoming the main attention and popular at the moment
novels like The Book Eating Magician and Everyone Else is a Returnee is really good i just can't imagine people not loving it

    >_> same thing happened to JP. Oversaturation of the same tropes over and over again. KR is relatively rare and new. it'll get more hate in a year or so.

There are alot of Chinese Novel publishing sites other than Qidian you know... Like 17k, SFACG that are also fairly popular. There's actually one on the back of my mind that I can't seem to remember though.

Anyway, @Lyase only a minority participate in discussions and voice their opinions. Not everyone cares to share with the world what they think.

Its not exactly losing steam. But readers want something new too.

The novels chinese translators are stuffing out seems to just be a repetition of other CN novels. After reading so much, you start to look for others.

Plus Korean novels tend to have an ending. Unlike CN novels which continues for 1000s of chapters, KR novels only last 100s. Like for example, Emperor's Domination is one of my favourite novels but everyone can see that each chapter, each arc is being overly stretched out. It contains similar plot cycling over amd over again.

PLUS GIVE ME BACK "Wicked Soldier King!" GREAT NOVEL IGNORED BY TRANSLATORS FOR OTHER ONES T_T

A couple years ago, CN novels were totally new. The "cliche" bits were new and interesting. KN novels are going through the same thing, currently. Give it another year and people will start to recognize the trends in KN novels and become less interested in every single one that comes out.

The monthly rankings on NU doesn't really reflect a drop in popularity for cn novels.
Personally I don't consider KR novels any better than CN novels on average either way.

Imo a large chunk of the "new stuff" that is being tl'd is Qidian publishings that are really bland and repetitive. They've been shitting out translations for literally what novels. Qidian EN/Gravity aren't picking up that many novels with unique outtakes or well fleshed out plot-lines and characters, some authors that do things like that are known to us but Qidian isn't interested. They're probably harder to translate too and that means more money to hire translators.
