"Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons", and its sequel, "Journey to the West: The Demon Strikes Back", are really good. The "League of Gods" movie had decent graphics and fight scenes, but the overall plotline was pretty crappy. "Monster Hunt" was decently funny, and the graphics were nice. "Mojin: The Lost Legend", was pretty good too, thou im not really sure it fits as a fantasy movie. Thats all the recent chinese fantasy movies I remember that I watched, thou I am sure there are a couple other good ones that I missed.
Oh yeah, and there was also the movie, "The Monkey King 2" that came out last year, but I don't really think that its a sequel of the movie "The Monkey King" from 2014 for the reason that the cast is completely different. Also, the theme and style of the movie seemed entirely different from the first movie, which sorta confused me. However, there is the Movie "Wu Kong", that is coming out in 2017, which should be pretty good.
The Mermaid movie was pretty funny, even thou some of the scenes were completely unrealistic and physics defying. But then again, that's Stephen Chow, and most other Chinese films in general for you. Almost but not quite family friendly in my opinion, at least for an American audience.
Some other recent Wukong adaptations: Monkey King 2 (2016) Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013) Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back (2017) The Tales of Wukong (2017) Other chinese fantasies: The Sorcerer and the White Snake Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon Painted Skin 1 + 2
Are Wuxia included like Hero(with Jet Li)? There's also the TV adaption of http://www.novelupdates.com/series/ze-tian-ji/ . The budget for that seems to be huge and is on youtube.
Thanks a lot. I have a lot to do with this. I just watched tomb raider too. Some good scenes but I didn't like the story.
A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandoras Box(1994) A Chinese Odyssey Part Two: Cinderella(1995) Stephen Chow‘s films are awesome!
