i think it would be impossible within 50 years but maybe be possible in 150 years or so. th reason for that is for a full body immersion like sao we must also remove the real world sensations that the individual will be experiencing . an example would if you were cutting down hordes of goblins but you can smell what's cooking in the kitchen that kind of thing. to completely remove real world simulation the person will be placed in a way similar to a forced coma or in a vivid dream like state. a helmet like in SAO would be difficult or nearly impossible but if it is a direct connection similar to what was equipped by the human trash in iron blooded orphan then it could be possible

I think... You would need more than just a super rich family(e.g. Bill Gates or something)... More like a large government project that focuses on bringing other projects, vendors, and sub-contractors... The complexity would be pretty much on par with the Manhattan project and would be just as large. Being able to circumvent patents and take in any and all research and personnel in developing the technology... This is if the focus is just to bring it within the next two or three decades... It would take say... A war or something to bring up something of this magnitude... Not sure how it would be used in a "war" except for making it an elaborate training simulator...

if you want a future technology , think about how it will effect the military technologies ...
to have a full scale VRMMO
first we must have a stable brain to machine connection, send and receive brainwave with a great accuracy (that would be a bloody hell headache machine)
and the military would like to develop brainwave technologies to another way instead : control more complicated war machines(Super robot ~~~)
and even so, to have a gaming machine to run full scale VR game ... a bed size would still too small for it
machine to machine connection : you will need a huge pc to run that game server, maybe as big as Pentagon building and a line to transfer some thousands TB per second
and even if that happen, how many hundreds years you have to work to buy that game machine lol

Lot's of LSD can probably give that kind of "real" world experience too.

    Not really
Full dive is essentially using consciousness to play the game, its like you are dreaming but aware of everything and you are in control of your body.
Your physical body should not need to do any motions.

i think without a super powerful game company that could up against nations, VRMMO would likely banned by nations
think about the possibilities of it
the users could remove their limit in the brain and their body could do the impossible (half prince) , the army would not pleased to spread that power
the company could hypnotize the players and control them
the players might confused between real life and vr worlds and commit crimes
or just more simple, lots of people is not pleased with their own life and wish to have a second, who need to traps thousands people inside a game when tons of them were already prepare to trap themself inside it ...

And you think they'd allow that technology to go in the hands of the public?
Besides, once business create something they'd advertise it to the max to get the maximum amount of profit. Especially with this kind of technology. If their secretive with it. But you may never know when the government is watching.

The scope to make something of this level would most likely be a government funded(specifically military) project... So chances are likely that said business would not be allowed to distribute it to the public. I'm sure it would be a dream come true if a hyper realistic VR training system could be used to give ground forces an actual feel of a battlefield... Where you can witness first hand through a simulator and experience it... Seeing and coping with a situation such as comrades getting shot and executing commands under those conditions, where a guy is "virtually" bleeding out and screaming and panicking for real... Adding blood and gore would add more to its value or even giving realistic pain as if getting shot...

There is no way a government would just openly give up such technology which would be able to train first class soldiers in actual battlefield conditions... Can you imagine the cost savings... Fuel, ammo, logistics... Having trained soldiers that have more experience in battlefield conditions which undoubtedly will save more lives due to it... the life saving costs... It would be super worth it to spend like a 100 billion or more on such a system, cause in the end it would save a lot of lives... Hell, it would already be a life saving measure in training... When you fuck up and crash in the simulator you can walk away and learn from it... If it was for real in a training exercise you mess up there you have a very real possibility of dying... Which if you think about it would be an irony, dying in a training exercise who's purpose was to teach you how to stay alive...

Also testing of new tactics in real battlefield conditions or new weapon systems against other weapon systems... Simulated in realistic fashion... Developing new weapons or figuring out how to adjust to new tactics in a safe but absolutely realistic environment... Military applications of hyper realistic VR tech are pretty much endless...

Creating a full dive VR is equivalent to getting a machine which could transmit knowledge about different courses. It isn't impossible to mess with the memories...The possibilities are endless.

Im my opinion, if the military devs completely or almost completely realistic vr, then one of the first practical/useable iterations of it would be something like the vr from Arma 3's tutorial and arsenal (I forgot what it actually is,) where the graphics are very much blocky/panel-y, but a decent amount of realism is otherwise included. The actual device would almost certainly be bigger than the basically-a-pair-of-sunglasses thing they have in game. As other people said, it would allow for better training compared to before. Heck, even now, the militaries of the US and probably a few other countries' militaries are using computer games and such to help soldiers learn map-using skills or coordination, and with better results than without. As with other military-developed technologies that get released to the public, a slightly dumbed-down version would eventually reach the civilian market, for us to mess around with. With that, we would see the advent of "full-real" vr, or whatever you want to call it, for games. But, that's only if militaries develop it first.

It's the age where immortality is possible.

I'm not gonna think it's gonna be soon
