So I just got curious about the history of novel translation. How long does it date back? What were the original platforms before NU?

Your question is way unspecific. People have been translating Asian novels for centuries.

Before NU, every site are a saperated entitiy. You gotta google the site after you search for it in mangaupdates.
Baka tsuki and spcnet are one of the early platform tho.
For jp and cn novels respectively.
I dont think korean translation are a thing yet unless it was manhua.

Well you see there was this little site called ahoupdates, which quickly lost the battle with novelupdates once the features and ability to stay up and not crash due to traffic started being better over here. Before that it was mostly rss feeds and going from novel blog to novel blog via connected blogs. Oh and bakatsuki was also a big one.

    Many years.

You might have heard of a certain physical medium known as paper, used to inscribe words.

Novels were put onto paper and a bunch of them completed would be called a 'book'.

Can't say anything about Japanese novels besides that it blew up in popularity during Baka-Tsuki's peak. Chinese novels as we know it really got attention with Stellar Transformations, but I'd say RWX's work on Coiling Dragon was the one that truly started the trend.

For Chinese novels, there were a few places translating wuxia (the actual wuxia genre). Wuxiamania, Wuxiasociety, spcnet, Among the Rivers and Lakes, and there was onebefore all of those but I can't remember what it was called. And Wuxiapedia as well. Stellar Transformations and Coiling Dragon began on spcnet (which triggered the CN webnovel boom that pretty much took over spcnet and basically put an end to wuxia translation and is also the reason so many people use "wuxia" to refer to all these webnovels that are not actually wuxia), but the CD threads had so many comments that it was hard to keep up with the chapter releases so Ren made Wuxiaworld to make it more manageable.

And these older forums began in the early 2000s. Like 2001-2002 or something. Might have been something before then too, not sure.
