I want a story, which, makes you think you know the plot, but makes you think if what you thought was true? Basically the outcome of an event in a story has to be a mystery, making you question everything. I also want a protagonist which make use of everything, like if he had a spiky tail, he would make use of that tail in combat and not just his weapons. I want enemies that use their brain, not just attack the protagonist randomly. I want realistic combat, not just shoot magic at the enemy and hope he/she dies. The protagonist has to plan, keep his mind calm, and use his enemy's weaknesses. I also want the protagonist is manipulative and at the same time be a combat force. An unique setting and plot, would do, too. (Man this is long...) I know, I'm asking for too much, but these type of stories are the good ones. They keep you into the story, asking what's gonna happen next? They make you think a certain direction, and then plot twists you. It could be an translation or not, these type of novels are just gold. Things I've read that could be close to this- Dungeon Defense Everyone Else is a Returnee Warlock of the Magus World Infinite Competitive Dungeon Society (actually haven't caught up, but it's really good from what I've read) Edit- I don't use the reading list, I don't know why, I just like my privacy.
Gekkou. It's only one volume and totally worth your time. It's not fantasy though. Rokka no Yuusha, if you can find it.
Invisible Dragon , makes you question everything Firstborn "short" story by Brandon Sanderson might fit
I support the Rokka no Yuusha suggestion it's a fantastic read and will leave you asking questions and wanting to read more.
There is also the other novel that shalvation translations covers "Your and my asylum" that would fit your criteria. Once you get far enough that is.
Akuyaku Reijo Ni Koi Wo Shite An intelligent, cool headed main and a very interesting plot that asks the question of who is going to win; the main character or the world. The main also has heterochromia (if thats how you spell it right) witch means he has diffrent coloured eyes and allows him to use two diffrent types of magic at the same time Also dont be desieved by the reincarnation tag. its very different from your average reincarnation plot
