This is my Dao of martial arts!”. He didn't get the best results on the martial arts test thing when he first entered if he was that despicable. Besides why would you want or expect him to do that? He's the protagonist, he's not one of those xianxia antagonist who (most of the time) go out of their way to act in a detestable manner in order to gain advantage against the hero. One of the reason readers enjoy xianxia is to see those people defeated/beaten up. If he actually sabotaged the sword then he'll be no different from zhang guanyu (who plotted against him using lan yuanyu). EDIT: Also if he actually did sabotage it, he'll never be able to work as an incriptionist again. Which put him at a disadvantage since that's where he gets most of his money and mats.
