Discussion Overuse of Divine Terms in Chinese Novels?

I've recently been reading CN webnovels, and, to be frank, I'm quite turned off by the overuse of divine terms. Even if the MC only shows a power that's, while impressive, underwhelming to be called somewhat godly. Is this just the cultural difference?

On another note is "I Shall Seal the Heavens" worth it? What is it's overall mood or plot?

 

What are these "divine terms" you speak of? Please give examples.

 

The thing is, there are a lot of words that would translate into 'Divine'. It's not as if they're all using 1 character.

There are various power divisions even amongst the gods in any mythology / religion / belief that is polytheistic.

The terms divine and gods do not necessarily mean all-powerful or beyond comprehension you know? Monotheistic religions do tend to make them like that but for most of human history, the powers of gods could be in a wide spectrum between weaker than an ant and those that can destroy universes with a single breath. Our Gods Are Different.

On the assumption that your culture is similar to western culture, upon which godly is deemed as almighty and all-powerful, I would say yes, it's a cultural difference. It's a manner of description.
However, you need to remember that the novels that you read are translated, and I can guarantee that most novels that are being translated aren't being done so by professional translators that have proper training in writing appropriately in both languages.
I Shall Seal the Heavens is definitely worth the read, however approaching a Xianxia novel as large as ISSTH with a pre-illusion of what it will be like is the wrong method, you can read the novels descriptions and ask for a Spoiler-free description of what the novel consists of, however asking for an "overall" mood is impossible for someone to properly answer.
The plot is, of course, to grow stronger and eventually be the strongest amongst the novels' universe. As it is with all light/chinese novels that are contained in the genre of "Xianxia"

 

It's mostly just culture.
That's how their language is, so a lot of phrases refer to superstition (devil/divinity), heroic aspirations, magic, etc. Plus the Chinese language is continually building on that like memes before memes were a thing.

there are a lot more characters and words in chinese when compared to english. naturally there will be words that do not have direct english translation. in that case, there will be english words being overused simply because it is the closest in meaning due to a lack of a better word. for example,the taste terms are different in food because some tastes are not even recognised in the west.

 

He makes a good point, for example Eskimo has around 50 words or so for "snow" in which the essence of each word that distinguishes it from the other words for snow could get lost in translation.

 

ISSTH is definetively worth thr try but you should wait 2-3 months, it will be completely translated in this period of time

 

OP, you're generalising. It's not something seen in Chinese novels, it's something seen in Chinese Xianxia novels. May seem like a small difference, but it's an important difference.

Also, separating such terms from Xianxia novels is impossible.
