I remember seeing this anime all over the place and the reviews about the show were both good and bad so I was hoping to find out a little more about it. What can I expect going into the show? I remember that one really brutal scene in the cave where that blue haired(?) chick was killed right in front of our MC(actually not even sure if its the same anime). So is the show like that throughout, with brutal themes? Or is it more light hearted?

I find that anime is always better for me when I go in with little or no expectations. For re:zero, I was just enjoying the thought that an isekai story was properly being adapted into anime. That doesn't mean it's not good though, it's probably one of my favorites of all time.

Tears, sadness, depression, apathy, the urge to beat the crap out of main character for being to stupid (well you could say though that he is pretty normal in a realistic way), and constantly thinking to yourself that the author is probably a s........ god i love this book anyway.

It's pretty brutal. Both physically and mentally. I can't speak for the novel but the anime has nice visuals, cool soundtracks, and good voice acting. As for the plot and such, it's kind of up to you on how you view whether it's good or bad

The anime (and novel, by extension) really likes to make the MC suffer, if that's what you want to know. It doesn't shy away from psychological breakdowns and blood. It kinda feels like what Madoka was for the magical girl genre, at some points. I'd love to see Gen Urobuchi's take on Isekai someday haha.

Oddly addictive anime with a cringy protagonist.

Second half of the anime isn't as intense as the first half though.

I like the psychological aspect of it and how realistic the MC is for a modern Japanese neet.
I got tired to those isekai story with OP MC.
Guess I like to see how MC grows from all the suffering he been through.
After all victory taste best when going through a lot of painful stuff.

    well. . . .
if the anime become a POV type of anime, in where the viewers can only see and hear what the MC is hearing and seeing. . .
then we will see the braveness and his desire and also his normalness. . . .
oh well. . . a good one indeed,

if your bored. . . watch School Days, a harem anime!

Writing is decent, it's meh really, a skilled writer would make what the author wrote in less pages but just as intense. But the main selling point is the character development and realistic portrayal of how ppl actually act/react. It basically breaks isekai is escapism for otaku cuz author bring realistic interaction between mc( expecting typical hero save damsel, everyone love him cuz he save someone yay whoo, have some cheat, when in reality he's just a nobody that popped up in their world with nothing) and the other world characters( that have status, their own political problems, connection, stuff going on) and the lines they say are really heart wrenching cuz it's what we dont want to hear
