How many times better are the computers now than 10 years ago? A lot right, then why are the computers still slow if you don't have the newest expensive one? Because the software is keeping up and too much IMO. Adobe reader, fk your constant updates and why does a text reading program need ~600MB, that is the size of 1 or 2 PS1 games...for a text reading program! First adobe probably had 10mb, that's just one example of what's slowing your pc/mac/phone down, think of more wasteful programs, share your opinions.

Isn't it common sense that more advanced software requires better hardware?
You can alwyas just, not update or downgrade if your pc isn't good enough.

You can only do so much before compability issues come up. What I meant is that this advanced software has a lot of unecessary shit eating your resources.

10 years ago, the programs could not even reach a part of the functionality of programs nowadays
4 years ago i used an outdated pc (win 98) with all outdated programs (money issues) and it was slow as hell.
    It is just your perception.

Well if you think about it most software gets this big because of people's demands and/or needs.

The more advance the software (more easy to use and more better appearance), need more resources from the hardware.

My perception? Is that why when I'm waiting for a receipt somewhere, they freeze and I have to wait 1-5min...for a reciept in 2017! because fking receipts need to be verified by the govt. Is that why I have to wait 2min for win to load on 2000$ pc and another 1min for browser, 1min for visual studio. I'm telling you pcs are just as slow with the current software as were the pc's 10 years ago, in fact they are slower.

While software does require more power, I think you are a little confused about the whole situation.

The issue is not that software is getting larger, the issue is the following: (that is not to say it isn't a problem, just not the biggest problem)

    1) People still use HDDs instead of SSDs which means longer you use the HDD, the more fragmented it is and is generally the biggest bottleneck. Most software run just fine on low end pcs unlike before.

    2) Software actually hasn't caught up with hardware. The problem is most programming languages and software practices are completely outdated. Our processors have been stuck at about 4ghz mark for years, the biggest improvements have been things like gpu acceleration, offloaded AES and other things to DSPs and other specialized sub processors.

The biggest advantage we have which is processors that can easily go up to 16 cores if we wish. Many pcs even have 4 cores. Unfortunately many applications are still written for 2 cores. Some are even still using only 1 core.

I agree that it seems that programs that should be fairly simple take up far more space than seems reasonable

Just to note, some applications set aside memory for future use to prevent crashes of you running out of ram mid process.

Not sure what receipt you mean, but does it require internet connection and validation from a 3rd party processor?

Overall though things tend to freeze up because the gui was not coded on a separate thread then the backend. I use some applications that don't do backend processing of remote calls which tend to cause them to freeze until remote call finishes.

My pc is about 5 years old and boots up in 30 seconds or less.

    Browser takes 5-10 seconds.

    Do you have an SSD?

adobe is counted as the worst of companies that releases bug fixes every other day, can't take that as all softwares doing that, and on the topic of softwares not advancing as quick as hardwares it takes a lot of manpower and time if you really want to develop a software that uses hardware efficiently, sadly with the quick moving world that's not possible bcoz deadlines.
