The chains were from when he was imprisoned by the Jin clan. The first time they met, MC saw Wen Ning at this archery competition, and due to nervousness, Wen Ning messed up. Later, MC chanced upon him practicing and praised and encouraged him. MC basically gave him a very much needed self-esteem boost, and Wen Ning is a darling who never forgot MC's kindness. MC's archery skills are top-notch as well, so that also led to Wen Ning really admiring MC for his strength.
