Honestly, the best way to deal with horrific smells is usually to just breath them as much as possible. Eventually, your brain will just start ignoring them. Though its really hard to do that.
I think I would like this series more if the translation weren't so slow and/or the chapters didn't feel so short. As it is, so little happens so slowly that its hard to care about any of it.
I kinda wish the author had spent less time on the locals. It was 100% certain that they wouldn't do anything meaningful until the MC showed up, so there was no reason to really care about them or their actions in the slightest, especially after so much of our time was wasted on them.

Just the last sentence. There was some foreshadowing here and there, but it didn't add up to even a single paragraph in total. Unless you mean the chapter before last, that one was about a third(?) MC right at the start and the rest was all cannon fodder.
