well, if the driving force for him to go to the town was the tournament and the sightseeing with his mother, there is no point to mention the tournament if they weren't going to partake in it... it would just be seen as a weird reason to have them leave the territory... honestly it would have been better if they had anoter plot device, like maybe a tea party, or some other reason for him to leave, and they would have ot attend it. If it is for a sword tournament, and it ends u just being a weird errand to buy like wheat flour, then there is no actual reason for the sword tournament to be mentioned in any which way.... but then again, it could just be that he doesn't join, but ends up defeating the champion of the tournament in one way or another

the mother gets kidnapped for some weird freaking reason, and no one gives a sh*t because they don't know who it is.
riley goes batsh*t insane and goes on a killing spree
maybe the villain says they will release her if he participates in the tournament or some other bullsh*t
(probably not)
or the villain is the champion himself, as honestly, if you kidnap the mother, you are going to die...
and then they will like square off or something and the champion guy will die, and somehow... somehow, there will be 1 person who sees it, and tells everyone else, and the story spreads like wildfire

 

Another bs reason that I can think of is that Coke is sponsoring the tournament and the winner gets lifetime coke supply.

Why do I have this weird feeling as if his mother is the heroine and this novel is going with the incest route? Please, I hope I'm terribly wrong.
