If it was any other novel i would have dropped it, but surprisingly I still expect a lot of good things from this novel

 

By history Damascus sword is deem as best sword (not using wootz steel like in the story) but at the same its appearance, modern weapon also start dominating the battlefield causing it to be forgotten and obsolete

 

and also because they couldn't replicate the same materials to make damascus sword

someone explain me what the hell is he doing?
i get that the wotz steel is rare thus making it expensive, the skills to make it is also rare
but if he increase the price right from the beginning, who could afford it once the people discover it with all thoses prices increase?

 

There are plenty of rich people the world. Putting it in context to our current world, a million for a sword is unimaginable for some, but it's pretty affordable for the rich.
Simply said, he didn't want to affect his future profit.
If the first sword is sold in our world, for say, 500,000, it will be extremely difficult for it to reach 1,000,000 in the future because people will feel as though they are being deceived, paying an excessive sum for what that shouldn't be worth it.
If Zhao Fengchen gets to buy the sword for 40,000 gold taels now, it is unlikely that he will pay 100,000 in the future as it would be the 'current market price' of the sword. In fact, no one will buy it at that expensive because of the precedent. Meaning, the first sale will most likely determine the future price of the sword to come.

It's not a problem whether people can afford it, it's a product aimed at the very high-end. It's not supposed to be sold to those ordinary nobles, it's supposed to be sold to the millionaires (in their world yeah). But this makes the consumer base extremely limited, so he must first make them feel that it's worth that value.

He is betting that those two sword masters are extremely intent in getting the sword. You can see that in the chapter as they continue to increase the price through bidding. I'm guessing he believes that he can increase the price and sell the least amount of sword to payback his debt. The goal he has is not just to make money nor pay his debt but to increase his and his country's future prowess, and therefore he wants to keep most of the sword to himself, his clan, and the country. The story will accelerate at his grandfather's birthday party when the king will be present. Just want to let you know that this is my hypothesis/understand of the story and not a spoiler
