Even with Daomei with him, it took Sun Jin quite some time in various conversations to gain information.

Of the farmers, laborers, gardeners, and carpenters who had done work for the estate, many now worked for the adjacent clans of nobles and while they had plenty of tales to tell about the deceased, there were a lot more ghost stories than one would have hoped for.

They all agreed those ruins were cursed; anyone who went there on a certain day, died violently. Also many a treasure hunter had lost their life attempting to come away with this or that trinket.

As for the manservants, maidservants who might have seen and once known them or about them... they proved to be far more difficult to find as apparently, even the servants who had the bad luck to be on the grounds had been targeted by whoever had killed them.

There were certainly escaped survivors but they were haunted by the horrors of that night, enough to be able to describe the assailants' appearances- especially not their faces or their robes, because those would certainly have been covered in the dark of night and anyone seeing them that close were cut down- but certainly the descriptions of the attacks were vivid. Spirit energy directed through hands and feet, blades and fans. Definitely cultivators.

The description of the scorch marks and resulting carnage as were the bearing of the killers- these were remembered. The killers had held themselves with pride, acting like the common folk were sheep for the slaughter, ignoring those further away from the mansion, but penning in the estate with some kind of formation before attacking the panicking noble family. Some had gone for their blades and still been cut down.

They had been very willing to throw quite a lot of energy away on the killing spree too. Too much. Mortals were easy to kill. It was either they had been making a show of themselves, or they had been looking for a fellow cultivator.

The ruins of the Earl's mansion were a reasonable size for their rank, even if the walls had crumbled, the buildings themselves fallen to wrack and ruin, overgrown by plants, areas that used to be inhabitable deep in rotting or dry leaves.

That family's estates, other than those 'ill omened' ruins...had naturally been given to new owners.

Estates owned by nobles were closer to being plantations, and could either be in one large clump or scattered around several areas or even provinces. A Prince's estate was often somewhere around thousands of rooms and averaged around thirty square kilometers of land. A Duke's was naturally smaller, and a Marquis' was smaller still. If a prince had three thousand rooms, then a Duke could have two thousand, a marquise one thousand and so on. The more favored an official or noble, the larger the land or estates they could be given.

Imperial family members and high ranking nobles and official like advisors, ministers, councilors all had mansions in the Imperial Capitol whose sizes were mandated by law, however their mansions in the countryside were often more grandiose while still being under sumptuary laws designed to keep people in their place by defining what a person was and was not allowed to display in public.

Brigands did not, in fact, lair in or anywhere near the mansion. Something hunted them down, was the word in the seedy taverns and inns.

Sun Jin loathed these parts of the investigations, because he had to cover himself in a rough, homespun hooded cloak and spend more time than he would have preferred in a den of scum and villainy that smelled heavily of fermentation, sweat, bad liquor and greasy food. At least he had definitely gotten enough evidence that something or someone... was there.

He had gone to the outskirts of the area in broad daylight with Daomei, examining the shattered brick, the crumbling walls, the rubble, the scorch marks all over the place. Some buildings had fallen to pieces completely. Others still stood, their roofs lopsided. The plants and fungi had taken over.

There was the evidence of the courtyard garden and more extensive estate gardens, all a wilderness by now. This place had once held fishponds, fountains, artificial streams and brooks which were either overgrown with lichen and algae and moss, or now dry as old bones. It had fake mountains, fake islands which had been abandoned; a variety of trees, shrubs and flowering plants of various kinds and in various sizes once carefully pruned and now overgrown. Its orchards of trees- some still bearing scorch marks from glancing attacks and recovering from them- were in many variants of quinces, plums, pears, apricots, cherries and peaches.

Something or someone had been harvesting from the place. That something or someone likely still lived in the area.

Sun Jin felt very worried about this. He would likely have to set up several protective formations around his lodgings tonight, if he was to avoid whatever it was that had killed the bounty hunters. Daomei would have to share his room.

And they hadn't even met the people who were possibly his maternal family yet.

This was not shaping up to be a good week.

Before even going to meet his possibly, probably maternal family, Sun Jin naturally took precautions. That is to say, he asked around. Specifically, he interrogated the people who worked for them as to what they were like. Mostly, this involved buying people a lot of beer and side dishes to get them chatty. However, sometimes the beer did not work. Sometimes you had hardboiled and loyal officers. That was when you got creative.

It is amazing how easily you could use a change of clothes, a mask and a thick homespun hooded cloak to get accurate results. Particularly when you hung any recalcitrant men upside down from trees by their ankles and thoughtfully put snakes* into their pants. They got downright chatty after that part.

They also apparently tended to get confused as fuck if you showed no interest in the house defenses, belongings or whatever and just wanted to know about the subject's reputation and if the guards had ever been sent out to murder people.

Apparently, even under threat of snake next to their uh... eggs, their answers were a nice and constant 'no' interspersed with screams of "YOU SICK FUCK!" and its many variants.

So at least they weren't murderers. that was good to know.

He thoughtfully pulled the snakes back out then cut the ropes, letting the poor sods fall. Nine times out of ten, they got up and tried to beat him to a pulp, but that was what you kicked people in the balls for. To keep them down in a small mewling ball of pain.

At least he'd made sure there would be no permanent damage.

*it was a completely non-venomous snake golem actually, little more than a child's toy but made to resemble the real thing closely enough that anyone seeing it tended to scream in terror.
