    You mean Subaru's phone?
The one that is super OP and survives longer than he does?

I'd recommend that as a replacement for the legendary brick, yeah.

Well my rule in electronics :
    1. Avoid apple at all cost.
    2. Repeat rule one.
    3. Repeat it again

Jokes aside, for phone One+ and Xiaomi are on the top, Huawei phones are decent, and Sony is not that bad of an option too. Most of their products are also below US$400

And just like someone said above, if anyone is looking for a phone that'll survive a WW3, old nokias will do more than that. Pretty sure it could make a hole in the sun if you put it at the top of an Atlas V rocket

If you can wait a few months for the new phones to be released and the old models will be cheaper and there are sometimes sales around Black Friday/Cyber Monday (Amazon has a lot of sales) and Christmas.

You're looking for a cheap camera phone? In that price range, I'd recommend Asus Zenfone3 Zoom. It has 12MP dual camera setup. And since you're developing an app, I think you'd appreciate the newer (well, at least compared to your current phone) Android version.

Though, to be honest, whenever there's a talk about phone camera, my mind instantly jumps to Lumia1020. It's outdated (WP 8.1, and still a single camera setup compared to today's dual cams), but still, 41MP PureView...

I suggest you go to aliexpress dot com. They make delivery worldwide. Below budget USD 300, you can get 4GB RAM, 64GB, 16MP or 21MP camera (Sony or Samsung - just choose whatever you like), Android 7.0, 6050mAh battery, 5.5 inch and above FHD screen, etc.... etc.... etc.... You will spoiled with a lot of choices and make you crazy to choose. My advice if you want to shopping at aliexpress, always buy from reliable seller. If you see hundreds of people buy the item and left positive reviews, go for it. I've been shopping at aliexpress more than 6 years already. If any item received have a problem, just raise the issue and guaranteed get your money back.

Go with XiaoMi phones. Sure, performance-wise they won't be able to beat high-end smartphone. But price-wise they're quite cost efficient.
One XiaoMi phone can survive for 3-5 years as long as you factory reset it about once every 1-2 years.
It's useless to buy a phone with high-price high-performace that can survive for, let's just say, 7 years, if you intend to discard it 4 years later.

Pretty sure with their improvement pace nowadays, a smartphone won't be smart enough to handle some apps in 4 years.

You probably should mention that you are from Canada as I see a bunch of people suggesting waiting for US holidays or phones 500$ USD while I'm assuming you mean CAD?

There are also some benefits to waiting, specifically phones right now have 4gb ram, but new ones will have 6gb. Maybe you'll be lucky and say Nokia 8 might try to go with a lower price for their phone. A lot of new brands start out with cheap prices to lure in customers: I remember Google, OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi and etc all offer super low prices when they just entered the market, and after they got some popularity their prices started to climb upwards.

My recommendation: Look at a site like Swappa. You can find new or gently used phones with clean IMEIs for much less than MSRP. You can get a Galaxy S8 for $500-600 on Swappa.

It's always interesting when people say they don't want something and people blindly recommend exactly what they say they don't want.
