I find it highly unlikely unless it(the AI) hides its nefarious thoughts, since we humans (who programmed its initial start up, and most likely designed a way to stop an AI that goes haywire) would probably notice well before it got to the level of HAL

we didn't invent nuclear power though? nuclear power has been going on naturally both in the universe itself (the sun) and even in some places on earth in what we call natural nuclear reactors. as for nuclear waste, we do have ways to vastly decrease the amount of waste produced using newer plants, but generally the only thing we can do with the waste is let it sit and decay naturally, the mistake you and others come upon is when you want to get rid of it instantly.....that's just not how it works. (unless you figure out anti matter, then you could explosively get rid of it)
