Discussion VRMMO bullshit

So recently i was wondering about VRMMO (lms, shuras wrath, thiefs rebirth, many others) genred novels and mangas. So many plotholes, incoherencies and weak basis made me often pissed of authors way of thinking. Weird xp and cash system, super lucky and skilled MC, OP items breaking game that our MC ofc gets by some oportunity, unexplained game bugs letting ppl get strong, mechanics from old games implemented even if not fitting (miss even if enemy was hit for example), or our MC KO-ing way strongest enemies effortlessly... I'm aware it's just some way for authors to make their worlds but... I am not sure if it's just me being overreactive to that clichés or there's really something with that. So was it just me who's irritated by that stuff? What are yours feelings about that matter, what is, for you, most hated thing in that genre? Share your feelings with us!

i think it most often happens in chinese novels (atleast that's what i've seen)
i mean, take for example 'a certain old man's VRMMO activity log'. He's not the strongest (though he is the strongest bow user) and while it's undeniable that he's special with his connection to the fairies this doesn't benefit him.
On the other hand we have the people from Zhan Long, Shura's Wrath and such who get really strong (or even endgame) items at the very start

 

Making a balanced game system which works as intended and isn't totally smashed to pieces by players is a pain in the butt to make, so I can excuse authors who pull out some weird-ass idealized systems which would never work IRL...

I think the thing that gets me most in VRMMOs is that the companies who make them are completely unrealistic. Where are the advertisements? In-game item malls? Microtransactions?? In MMOs, one-time purchase to play the game just don't cut it. Subscription-based makes sense, but there should also be another way for players to continually invest their money into the game. If they're relying solely on subscription then the company is missing out on a ton of profits. I'd totally love for the MC to get slapped in the face with untimely GM announcements regarding RL events and item mall advertisement windows as they're playing the game. I want to see player interaction, dumb chat logs, and rich people spamming world chat whenever something amazing happens. Otherwise, it's just an alternate world with some floating UI windows.

I guess that's not very "VR immersive" but still... since I'm reading a MMO, I want to feel like it's an MMO, you know?

Inconsistent UI is another thing which bugs me but I won't get into it T_T

 

The Japanese based ones I'm not too into; just too much of the same old tropes and cliches you'd expect. Chinese is also normally hit or miss on the vrmmo side. Personally I only liked LMS (Korean) and Alterworld series by D. rus (Russian) until book 6, where it just wasn't good to read.

 

Bullshit novels, that's what I call it, never read bullshit, same goes for harem shit, and psycho murderer CN shit, last but not least arrogant enemies and MC alike, not even counting fucking happy go lucky idiots from Japan.

they make their VRMMO around their current MMO which is very much pay to win

As far as I'm concerned, the Chinese VRMMO are just power fantasies the authors wished they could have. Meaning it's prob written by someone who wish they could just sit home and play games all day long

 

Pay 2 win games are more common recently then they were a decade ago. It was almost taboo to have in game transactions since it would hurt the playbase and in game community. These days its much more common, however most of the novels in current translation are much older.

You mention LMS, Shura and Thief but I think you're describing Zhan Long instead

 

I'm reminded of log horizon where they literally point out faulty game mechanics combining with real life physics.

Like in game food.

 

The management in those novels is almost always bullshit: uncontroled AI's, GM's who can't check the logs to know who did something, MC's stumbling upon secrets and bugs the moment they put a foot in the game (sometimes not even that, they get them in the character creator!), plus game systems that would make people ragequit left and right (Yeah, I'm looking at you, "you-cant-log-for-24-hours-after-you-die", people are paying lot of money to play this shit!)

But well, is the same everywhere: in xianxia, they find legendary items with wise masters inside; in isekai, they get a cheat from the beginning, in Re: stories either they are a monster with epic evolutionary chances or a kid with damn strong parents and a library with magic books easily accesible for a todder...

 

My biggest problem with Chinese VRMMO stories is that some of the MC's skill themself pure STR, yet somehow manage to dodge almost every attack by the pure DEX assassin, who is only faster b/c of his class and not his stats...

As for the VR story I can't stand the most:

I don't remember the name, but the MC's best (and only) friend's parents are quite rich, although not as rich as the MC's family. MC (male) is as beautiful as a girl and thus developed a complex about it, leaving him with only one friend.

MC buys the first edition of the game and gets 1-4 random gifts as a bonus.

So far, the story is still readable, but that's where sh*t gets real:
His presents are (if I remember correctly):
0. He gets the maximum number 4
1. He can choose a hidden race and gets a bonus for being the first one to do so
2. He gets an additional job (everybody only gets one, he has two), which allows him to do many more things than the average player
3. He gets +3 stat points more than anyone else at EACH FREAKING LEVEL UP
4. He gets +5 luck (+50% drop chance, etc. can NOT be skilled with stat points)

So basicly we have a MC who's:
- The richest kid in his country
- Beautiful to a fault
- A player that has gotten an OP character without the author even TRYING to make it look like he worked for it
- And (if I remember correctly) an harem tag
...
I don't know how well the story's written afterwards, but I refuse to read past the ridicoulus character creation chapters

 

As far as cant log in 24 hours after you die, that would be plausible..even might be necessary in some cases. This is virtual REALITY after all. Although you dont truly get hurt, dont take actual cuts or stabs, the mind registers them. The chemical imbalance from a serious injury, and even death would still register even after you leave the game. A persons mind can cause fake injuries, to become real. Repeated deaths could cause major health problems if they let you continue to play. Not to mention if you cant log in for a day, youd try harder..not to die.
