What is the difference between light novels and web novel?

 

Web novels are published on the internet (not too different from a blog or forum post, though there are special sites for it as well), light novels actually come out as books.

Often times novels start as web novels and after securing a publisher turn into light novels

Light novels also have illustrations and professional editing.

 

Light novel is a term that is being used to describe those novels that aimed at teenagers in Japan from what I see and they're being properly published by a publisher. They're available in store and most of the time, online too. The publisher is usually a company so the editors etc etc are professional.

Web novels are novels that being posted by authors on the internet and they're only available on the internet. Often it's self-published.
