Yup, the ML is technically evil...

It's been a while since I've read this so I might get some details wrong. Here goes~

ML's family was said to have been massacred by him when he went crazy one night. ML's memory of that night is fuzzy. It turns out there's a mastermind who drugged the ML and killed his family, because his family had this peerless cultivation manual/technique. The Jianghu and public think that ML killed his family and that he's 'evil.'

ML is undercover in the sect because he wants to figure out what really happened that night and take revenge if needed. He's also looking for the missing cultivation manual. ML's true form is a large black python (?).

Ending of the novel is how ML finally figures out what happened that night his family was killed and ML getting together with the MC.

Yes and no.

There're two parts to it. One is the actual manual and the other half seems to be this alternate dimensional space treasure thingy (pagoda). MC happened to find the manual and so that part gets back to the ML. The pagoda thingy... well, ML doesn't like it because some douchebag tried to trap him in it and our MC sacrificed himself so that he was the one who got sucked in instead. The pagoda may as well be called the Training Ground From Hell. Literally. There are nirvana (?) flames that randomly spray out from the ground, walls, and ceiling -- you do not want to be in those flames because they can literally burn away the soul. Half of MC's face was scarred from this incident (fixed by ML later, but still) and even ML thought MC was dead.

 

Who was the mastermind, how did they find out, and what was their end result?

 

Is ML a descendant of the original sect leader and his python?

 

There were two manuals, one ML inherited, and the other MC inherited.

@scriptor The pagoda actually had nothing to do w/ ML's family and was instead a treasured artifact passed down in the sect MC and ML joined. It ended up being a vital clue in figuring out the true mastermind since it resonated w/ the cultivation manual from ML's family.

Spoiler: The mastermind

The sect master of MC and ML's sect. They found out by piecing together a variety of clues and then lured out the mastermind w/ bait to confirm their suspicions. In the end, the sect master committed suicide by voluntarily jumping into the pagoda (and being burned to death by its flames).

Spoiler: The python and the original sect master

They both went to a higher realm, but b/c the python accidentally killed the son of the emperor there, his soul was destroyed. The original sect master tried to save him and was cursed and banished to reincarnate in a lower realm with no cultivation so he could never return.

MC knew about the manual from the novel, so he went to get it hoping to use it as an apology gift towards ML. It's said only to accept descendants of ML's family, but when he was verifying its authenticity, it activated and chose MC as its inheritor, which freaked MC out a lot.

Yes, ML's name gets restored after the true mastermind is exposed.
