So... Someone made a thread about how a manga aggregator is now going legal and taking down their aggregator site. In the process they made a big blog post explaining why they're doing so, their own history and the goals of their new legal site. I thought it was a pretty nice move overall and was happy that a pirate site is now going the legal route.
Yet when I saw the comments in the thread, most people seemed to doubt the intentions of the creators and badmouth them for whatever they did or are doing, and I'm just like... Why? I mean... Someone does something bad and says "I'm sorry I did something bad in the past, I have no excuses, but I'm trying to atone now by doing something good to the very community I did something bad to." Isn't that a great thing? I mean, sure, it could just be a bunch of empty words that they said just to look good, but... Does this really matter?
I can understand doubting people's intentions when they're trying to sell you something that may end up backfiring on you or that affects your personal life, but... Why does anyone has the need to distrust company creator A in their intentions in making a company that is actively good for you? In the worst case scenario you'll just ignore their existence and they'll never bring you any harm. In the best you'll start consuming their product and be satisfied with it... Why do you even care if the seemingly good intentions are real or not? It's all good for as long as they deliver on their promises, isn't it?
It just kinda baffles me how people can have a need to say "These guys are evil! Everything they are saying have evil intentions behind it!", because... Really, who cares? They can have as many evil intentions as they want as far as I care. As long as they deliver on their promises and provide good content that I want to consume and that doesn't harm other people in their industry, I'll gladly support them for as long as my money allows.
It's like looking at a TV Show and thinking "Oh, I bet this celebrity is just all smiles and friendly because they're being filmed, they must be a complete asshole once the camera isn't filming anymore." I mean, sure, you can think that, but does it really matter if the celebrity is funny or annoying when the camera is turned off? You only have contact with them for as long as the camera is filming, so isn't it fine to judge them only by what you can see? It's not like anything they are doing can have any negative impact on you after all.
Dunno if I could call this a rant, those are just some thoughts I had and had to put them somewhere.
What's the problem with trusting people?
