I've always believed that every work of art or literature (or anime or movie) isn't for everyone. I may find one close to my heart while others may cringe at it and vice-versa.
I'd fallen in love with this anime Valvrave the Liberator, but later I came to realize that not many people ever loved it.
What attracted me to this not-so-well-known story?
Well, I think I was captivated by Haruto's struggle to protect his childhood love Shoko and Eruerufu's unwavering quest to find a safe place for princess Lieselotte. Grand ideals, military arrogance and quest for freedom- all these sound great, but what actually works as the driving force in the battlefield is the underlying human desire to see the loved ones safe and sound and nothing else.
Why do we fight? What is at the root of our patriotism? Isn't it a desire to protect our loved ones, the home where they live and the land on which that home stands?
In a great war novel I once read there was this protagonist who in the face of enemy invasion, stood in front of a very old cemetery and resolved to stop the enemy at any cost, so that the land where his forefathers slept in peace for hundreds of years wouldn't be trampled by the enemy. A very dramatic scene, some will say, but people who have to flee from one country to another just to stay alive will know the pain of being uprooted from their soil and tossed into the crowds of hostile strangers in alien worlds.
Is there really any safe place where you can take your loved ones and hide them? Perhaps not. So Eruerufu strives to create one for Lieselotte by brute force and Haruto slowly comes to understand him and accepts his path.
What an irony!
Warmongers create a false sense of insecurity in the hearts of people and force them into the battle for survival. We strive to protect whatever we hold sacred and dear to our hearts and in this process, we kill others who are struggling for the same reason. How ironical!
Forgive my incoherent ramble, but I just wanted to tell you how I felt about it.
Thank you for reading :cookie:

High schooler piloting a mech? I have not seen this one.

I agree with the first statement. Different things for different people. :blobicecreamlove::cookie::blob_coffee::blobpopcorn:
