Suddenly my heart crashed against my ribcage and went thrashing violently.
I broke into a cold sweat. It was another attack of PSVT.
PSVT. Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia. A not-so-life-threatening cardiac anomaly which may become fatal under certain circumstances.
Not that it was a stranger to me. I had already been under its attack countless times. Generally, the heart beats returned to normal after a few hours at most.
But this time it was different.
The wretching pain in my chest had already thrown every single bit of water out of my system. Dehydrated, breathless I struggled to hold on to my senses. What went so wrong this time?
I was taken to the nearest medical facility. The Medical staff in charge there did what they could but there was actually not much they could do.
My pulse rate was well above 280, my blood pressure too low.
The RMO told me that he had already called the cardiologist in charge and that he was on his way. So I must hold on.
Hold on to what?
I doubted if the doctor would arrive in time. What, if he didn't?
Panicked, I turned to God in my mind. Please, God! Let me go back to my child! She's still so young!
Then something dawned on me. My child had her own Destiny. If she was to grow up without ever knowing me, could I ever change that ?
In a moment, I became calm. And resigned. There was nothing I could do but wait. To see if Time was on my side.
The pain was still there. It seemed my heart had grown a thousand iron fingers and with them twisted my inards. But my mind had calmed down.
I was not panicked anymore.
Then the doctor arrived.
He was going to give Adenosine intravenously. But there was some delay.
I could hear his low yet angry voice:
"Why is there only one ampule? I need two!
Someone said something in an even lower voice. I couldn't hear her.
It seemed they didn't have more than one ampule and the procedure couldn't be attempted without two of them.
Then they found out a second ampule that was previously brought for another patient and was lying there unused. It saved the day.
The drug was pushed into my system.
Instantly, I felt a violent thurst at my heart. It seemed my heart was flung out of my chest and I was flung at the ceiling! Fire rolled through every cell in my body and I couldn't breath.
Then it stopped abruptly.
My heart had returned to its normal rhythm. There was calm inside me as if nothing had happened.
I could hear people's voices. They seemed to be relieved.
After some time I opened my eyes and saw the doctor standing beside me, checking my pulse rate. He looked up at me.
I smiled and said, "Thank you, doctor."
He placed a hand on my forehead and smiled back. "Don't worry! You are alright now," he said.
I was not worried anymore.
The fear of death had come and gone.
