Earl Grey tea is the most popular flavoured black tea in modern times and a classic drink of English afternoon tea. It used Chinese tea as a base tea which is then flavoured with oil of bergamot for a clean flavour and a refined aroma. Its name comes from Britain's Charles Grey, the second Earl Grey. Legend tells that he received a mysterious flavoured tea recipe from a mysterious Eastern friend and so produced this brand of tea with its essence of bergamot.​
