The Tale of Merchant Zan’s Immortal Army Part 1

Many throughout the ages have argued the same old argument of quantity vs quality. However, there are few great men that solved that quarrel.

An unlikely individual to solve this trouble was a merchant by the name of Kenek Zan. His friends described him as very loud and belonging somewhere on the duller side of the smart spectrum. His associates described him as a party man with all the lavish parties and banquets he threw. However, when it came to money, they all agreed on one thing.

No one could pinch a penny like Kenek Zan.

Some say he was so shrewd that he once showed up to a business transaction with a king drunk, and tried to buy fine Hemmingsworth Silk and Jag Eggs for less than 80% of the markets price from the king. Others say he was a really extremely poor but acted rich.

One day, the Tuule Dutchies came under attack from 3 separate countries. The cause, a political marriage scandal/murder started the fire, but rich Enchanting Stone deposits and newly discovered dungeon called to the greed of many.

Promises of a share of the land and resources plundered were promised and alliances were made. With the excuse of avenging their crown prince, the Duchy was surrounded and laid siege to on all sides.

Due to the war and siege of the country, poor Zan was unable to leave. He and his caravan had come, sensing the flames of war would be a good chance to earn some coin, but soon regretted it when the local rulers declared all who sought to profit from the trouble would be executed and their goods seized.

Zan was in a bit of trouble. He was unable to leave the Duchy, nor was his kind welcomed in them. Soon he came to a decision.

He would form his own mercenary group and try to force his way past the border. It wasn’t impossible. ‘It’s not like he would be fighting an army right? They wouldn’t waste a bunch of soldiers on a simple merchant like him right?’. Thoughts such as this ran through his head as he began making the necessary purchases. Buying slaves, hiring real mercenaries to train them, and outfitting the entire unit.

In the end, his unfortunate habit of being reluctant to part with too many of his hard earned coinage caused him to skimp out on spending on the troop. He trading small amounts of bulk Iron he had brought for an even smaller amount of enchanting stone. Instead of hiring and purchasing from local smiths to outfit his troop, he bought slaves with little experience in smithing. He even went as far as to scavenge from slag piles for additional materials.

In the end, a small troop of 50 slaves, trained for a little over a month, were outfitted with crude and mismatched armor. The enchanting stones were applied to the ring mail shirt, which was about the only uniform piece of equipment in the whole group so that each of the slaves who wore them would have a harder time bleeding.

This, of course, caused a few problems with the bodies of the slaves as soon as they were put on, turning them all into abominations that only a mother could love. The unfortunate line of thinking that brought Zan to decide on this enchantment instead of a normal vitality increase was that if they bled less, it would cost him less to pay for medical supplies.

Zan’s mistake turned all the slaves and mercs unlucky enough to wear them hideous but also gave them immense power. Being unable to bleed meant that they were harder to kill, bordering impossible. One would have to destroy vital organs in order to kill them. Even dismembering would only take them out of the fight for a little time.

One of the things Zan did spend good money on was a healer who could heal almost any would short of complete immolation/disintegration or death. His thoughts when hiring her was that it would be dangerous for him to go into such a dangerous war zone without proper medical treatment on hand. ‘What if he were to get hit by a falling stone or arrow?’ ‘What if he were to fall ill to poisoned water or vicious snake bites?’(He also hired her for her breasts so that at any time during the journey, he would have some "entertainment")

Many people saw him and his preparations to leave and wished to tag along. However, he did not want the extra company to slow his ‘tactical retreat’ down and left his caravan behind, making a break for the border.
