The little kingdom of Endulgia rose in stature as a major power even as it had to suppress the Demon Forest.

From the descendants of minor nobilities looking for fame, to the third sons from poor villages looking for their next meal; to the adventures looking to test their strengths and the merchants that sought to do business with them all. They all came to Endulgia. Endulgia, in turn, was in need of these adventurers to suppress the growing numbers of monsters from the Demon Forest and the bounties of its lands were more than sufficient to provide for them all.

If you have troubles making ends meet, go to Endulgia, the saying went.

Eventually, the Kingdom of Endulgia became known as a country whereupon its citizens were safely sheltered within the perimeter walls and the adventurers who fought the monster at the border of the Demon Forest.

The adventurers, though for the most part, were mostly lowly refugees without patrons to support them. There were many who lost their lives, unable to escape the daily struggle to survive. Yet, there were some through their wits and cunning who did manage to succeed and gain riches and fame.

With the abundant harvest the land provided and the various cooking methods from the different countries that the adventurers brought with them, the local cuisine flourished. The art and skills of the blacksmiths were also constantly challenged to improve to better withstand the monsters in the Demon Forest. And indeed, with the rare ingredients that Demon Forest provided, improve they did. The markets thrived with the various goods produced. Gambling dens, bars and brothels lined the outer walls for the transient pleasure of the adventurers who frequented them.

It wasn’t long before the city became known as a garrison city with multitudes of people and goods, constantly flowing, ripe with vitality and vigor.

Mariella was an orphan in this garrison city.

She had no memories of her parents. Like many of the other orphans, she had probably been abandoned at the orphanage shortly after birth by her mother who was likely to have been a prostitute impregnated by an adventurer.

She didn’t think her situation was especially misfortunate.

There were a lot of other children like her and at least her mother had written her name “Mariella” on her swathing clothes. The name one received from a blood kin was a true name and it was a necessity for borrowing the world’s power when using any skill..

It was because she had a true name, she was adopted by her master, an alchemist and she was able to make her living as an alchemist.

It was a nice lunch - hardly any interruptions. Unfortunately, my brains refuse to make this any nicer.
