Mystery Mansion

After carrying the sleeping Speer to the guest room, Ecquria headed for her father’s study.

She wanted to rest as well but was in no position to do so yet. There was still much she needed to impart.

“She seems to be a fairly unusual girl.”

“Yes, sir. But it is also true that I was saved because of her.”

Ecquria had commenced to tell her tale of the events that had taken place. Hiding nothing in the telling. She told the tale as truthfully as she could from her observations.

The more he heard of the deeds of Speer, the deeper the furrow grew between his brows. How she had a tamed Kingpurun under her command, how she pounded the orcs to death - none of which would be the actions of a child. It was impossible to believe.

And when it came to explaining Speer’s magic, even Ecquria had some difficulties in explaining what she was capable of.

But she did have proof in this regard. It was the guards under Ecquria’s command that had been killed by the orcs. Speer had removed their corpses from the ‘storage’ at the entrance of the city. They were taken to a place to rest while they awaited their final burial.

After hearing the tale to its conclusion, Duke Crimson sighed deeply.

“A strange magic and physical abilities unbecoming of a child…..perhaps we should assume that she has been granted some sort of gift.

“But Speer has not ever mentioned a god?”

“It is not only the devoted that are granted the gift. The gods are known for their capricious nature, after all.”

Those connected with the Church would, no doubt, deny this. However, the various gifts the gods granted did not always match the religion that worshiped them. Some gods would require a special test, while others would grant their gifts out of the blues without even identifying themselves.

There were even stories that one day upon awakening, there was a holy sword left besides their pillow.

“At any rate, we should not treat her disrespectfully. But all this can wait until after she has awakened and we’ve talked to her.”

“Father, sir, I would not think it of you but you can’t be thinking of…”

“I have no intention of depending on her fighting abilities. To have a child go off to their death is not something one should do as a lord of a domain or as a human being. Only one who has lost all rights to be one would act thusly.”

Ecquria breathed a sigh of relief.

The Crimson province needed all the able bodied fighters they could get right now. It was impossible to measure how great Speer’s fighting abilities might be but she would probably be more than capable of dealing some sort of damage to the army of orcs.

The gifts from the gods had the possibilities of overturning even the most hopeless of situations.

Even so, Ecquria still did not wish to send a child out into battle.

“There are other problems we must contend with. Now, regarding the Palace Guard that incited you….”

As Duke Crimson changed the direction of the conversation, the room began to fill with tension. Though important, their conversation to this point had been only in regard to how they would handle a little girl. The conversation from this point on would involve not only all the people who lived in the province but the very fate of the Kingdom itself.

“You are sure there were ‘only two’ of them? There were no other witnesses and they are unmistakably dead?”

“Yes, sir. They did not have the time to contact anyone as it was over in a second. It may be unseemly to say but it was a rather fortuitous moment for us amidst our misfortune.”

“Harrumph. Vermin as such are best off dead. In any case, we can now concentrate on our battle with the orcs.”

They would let the death of the Palace Guard fade into oblivion. The duke let his silence convey his message. Ecquria wished she could proclaim their deaths were fully justified. However, she understood the necessity to avoid further chaos in their current situation.

At any rate, the most important thing was to deal with the dangers the province currently faced.

Even a new adventurer could handle an orc or two. But once they made a nest and swelled in numbers to create an army, it was a different story.

There were even examples of whole countries that were destroyed.

It would not be out of the question to have the standing army called upon to deal with a group of even a hrd of hundred orcs. Not responding immediately to the threat was incomprehensible.

But the Duke of Crimson had an even more sinister speculation of what was to come.

PC is going out of commission next week probably not for long though. We're in the midst of summer cleaning around here...
