SURVEY REFLECTION
Wrapping up, just a couple of reflections on how to improve this survey if ever there is a next time. I’ve mentioned a couple problems with individual questions that’ll need to be fixed and sections that needed more expansion and cohesiveness, but those are problems in design and easily resolved now that this survey is complete as precedent.
A more difficult issue is getting a truly representative sample; as I brought up at the beginning of this analysis, most of the “marketing” for this survey was done in General Chat, which might skew results. Keeping the survey alive longer might help things, this time it was open for four or five days while I actively bumped the survey thread and moderately derailed other threads with advertisement. However, I was somewhat worried that keeping up those tactics beyond that period of time would have gone from “vaguely shameless” to “actually a nuisance”. Perhaps it would have been better to have kept up the permanent link in my signature and then posted heavily in the Novels and Community Games sections for a month or two to try and entice respondents from those sections, as well. Or I could just thicken my skin and continue bumping the thread for that entire period, no matter how shameless such self-promotion might be. Threads posted in the Novel Updates Site Discussion area tend to stay on the first page longer, but it seems less users actually look through it. It’s not an easily solved dilemma.
Anyway, as I’m sure has been apparent, I’ve kept this whole thing pretty informal and haven’t really pulled out actual p-values and statistical tests. If I did statistical tests like an ANOVA, I only posted the conclusion rather than any of the numbers. Ultimately, this makes this survey more of an interesting opinion piece than a work of any actual value, but I had fun and I hope that you will, at least, derive something of interest from it.
It seems like the full results were too long to be included in a single blog post, so here's a handy table of contents to which I'll be adding links once I make the posts.
