At the top of a hill there lays a castle sat still, overlooking an idyllic village of stout houses and soundless denizens. This is because the time is that of the midst of night, with the only things alight being the lanterns of the castle guards, and, of course, the dim radiance that only the moon could give out. A small cluster of clouds were moving on their way this night, shrouding the moon for mere moments. Seeing his fleeting chance a man donned with a masquerade mask, a top hat, a suit, and a long, flowing cape took perches upon the outer castle walls and hopped down towards the inner courtyard opposite to the gates.

It was here where he would enact the next step of his meticulously planned endeavor. He didn't dawdle by restlessly looking left and right for any potential audiences to his illegal entrance. He knew that this place would be deserted at this time of day, on this day of the week. Yes, he had staked out the area from afar for a far longer time than he would ever care to admit. Suddenly, something metal clanged onto the stone ground. The masked man turned towards the origin of this noise; a women in a black dress with white trim and over it a white half-apron with ruffles. A chambermaid the masked man concluded from her attire. What she dropped was a metal bucket that had within it soapy water, now spilled across the ground.

How foolish of me the masked man thought, overconfidence will be written on my tombstone. He stared daggers at her, inspecting the possible amount of threat she may appose to him and at the same time waiting to see what she would next do. The maid did the same, except for an imposing stare though, it was more so one of astonishment. Seeing that there was nothing to fear from her he said, "You didn't see me," and tossed a coin that glinted gold toward her, which she just barely caught with the use of both her hands. The maid nodded hurriedly and walked away exactly as hurriedly. The masked man let out a sigh of relief. Soon after the maid came back, picked up the bucket she had dropped, and walked away again, embarrassed. The masked man was also slightly embarrassed for a reason he wasn't sure of and pretended to not notice her, looking away.

Bitter Sweet likes this.
