Hello, and welcome to NUF °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
You might be a little confused about why some stranger you’ve never seen before posted a link to a profile called @Welcome to NUF on your profile page. Well, if you were curious enough to click on the link there in the hopes that you would get some answers, you’re in luck!

This is a simple introductory tutorial/guide to Novel Updates Forum - also known affectionately by many users as NUF.

Before we start, it’s a good idea to take a quick look at the Forum Rules and FAQs. I personally find that the FAQs are very helpful for answering questions about both NU and NUF.

Now I’ll guide you through some of the most common functions on NUF and explain some features that often confuse new users. Pictures can be found in spoilers, which you can open by clicking on them.

1. Commenting on a profile post
You might have noticed this already without me pointing it out, but if you didn’t, don’t worry. You’d be surprised at how many new users miss the 'Comment' button located at the far right of a profile post (next to the Like button). You can just click on it to comment under a profile post.

2. Changing your avi
Your avi (avatar) or pfp (profile picture) is the picture you use for your profile. It shows up in forum posts and profile posts and makes you feel more like a person rather than just an account. To change your avi, just hover over your username at the top right of your screen and click on 'Avatar'. Upload an image (you’ll notice a lot of users use anime avis because we’re all weebs), and you’re all set! Just make sure the picture you use as your avi doesn’t contain anything inappropriate and is at least 200 x 200 pixels.

3. Following someone
You can follow someone just by clicking on the 'Follow' button on their profile or by clicking on their name then clicking the 'Follow' on the pop-up window for their profile.

4. Posting a message in a thread
To post in a thread, just choose a thread you want to talk in and post your message. Please note that mods will merge your posts together if you post multiple times without anyone posting in between. Every time you post a message in a thread, your message count will go up by one, which will unlock new features like allowing you to upload images, post links, and start your own threads. Please also note that your message count only increases for posts you make in threads so profile posts do not count. Posts made in the 'Games' section of the forum will also not count towards your total number of messages.

Threads that can help you get started include:

5. Creating a thread
You won’t be able to make a thread until you’ve made 5 thread posts (or "messages"). You can see how many thread posts you have on your profile. To make a thread, you can navigate to one of the forums (such as General Chat), then click on the blue button on the top right that says 'Post New Thread'. Know what your purpose for making the thread is and try to be clear about the topic of discussion (see this helpful tutorial on how to create a good thread). Please note that you can’t delete a thread after you make it but you will be able to edit it.

6. Posting links
You won’t be able to post links until you’ve posted at least 5 messages in threads. To post a link, just click on the hyperlink icon, then copy and paste the URL you want to link. If you want the link to be a specific text, first highlight the text you want to link, click on the hyperlink icon, then copy and paste the URL you want linked.

7. Posting an image
You can post an image either by inserting a link or uploading one. Please note that you won’t be able to upload an image until you’ve posted at least 100 messages in threads. To insert an image via a link, just click on the picture icon, then copy and paste the URL of the image you want to add. To upload an image, click the blue 'Upload a File' button on the bottom right, then select the image you want from your files. When you upload an image, remember to click on the “Full Image” button to post the high-res version.

8. Changing your title
You might have noticed that some users have their own custom title and you might really want one too but don’t know how to change it. Well, unfortunately, you won't be able to change your title until you’ve posted at least 100 messages in threads. Once you’ve reached 100 messages, just click on 'Personal Details' from the drop-down menu and you can type in the custom title you want there.

9. Sending a private message
You can send a private message (also called a PM) to multiple people or just one person. You will need to wait 24 hours after your account was created or make one post and wait 30 minutes to access this feature. To send a private message on NUF, either hover over or click on the little envelope icon on the top right corner next to your username and then click on the 'Start a New Conversation' button. Enter the username(s) of the person (or people) you want to make a private message with, add a title, as well as the content of your message. When you're satisfied, scroll to the bottom and click on 'Start a Conversation' to send your message. You can also customize the settings of your private message by checking the options at the bottom.

10. Money
So you’ve posted in threads but then when you return to your profile, you notice $5, $10, or $X amount of money on your account. You might be really confused because you don’t recall adding any money to NUF and you think it might be a bug. Worry not! It’s not a bug, that’s just NUF’s virtual currency system. The money listed there isn’t actually real money so your conscience can be at ease. Every time you post in any thread, you automatically earn $5 for shorter posts and $25 for posts exceeding 50 characters. Users at NUF affectionately refer to the virtual currency here as "nuffies" and they can be used to buy icons for either yourself or other people, as well as unlock other perks like increasing your like limit. The Shop has a list of all the things you can buy with your nuffies.

11. Games
There are a lot of fun games available in the Community Games section of the forum. Although posting in these game threads won’t increase your message count, they’re a whole lot of fun and will also earn you more nuffies.

That’s it for the tutorial! I hope you found it helpful and/or that it answered some of your burning questions. If you still have anything you’re unsure about, feel free to ask @Lemonfairy or any of the other users here (we’re all very friendly!)

Thanks for reading and have a nice day :cookie:

@Baby yoda_002 like this. Just add an @ sign in front of their username and click on the user you want to mention out of the ones that pop up when you're typing their username.
