Hello, fellow NUFfians! Not many know me for I mostly do work on Novel Updates (NU) and not Novel Updates Forum (NUF) but I have an important announcement to make!

After serving its duties and services for more than a year, it is now time to retire the old Cleaning Tags Thread for the more sleek cleaner model........

Cleaning up tags on NU V2.0
    Created by: @LaDyViL @marine1corps
    Contributed: @runsing

You might be wondering why is there a need to create new thread when the old one exists. Well, there are 4 reasons as to why this is a necessary move.
    1. To grab your attention.
    2. With the recent addition of the Tag Definition there is a need for a harder crackdown on tags.
    3. To provide useful resources in regards to tags.
    4. To allow mods to modify first posts with ease without bothering Tony.
With introductions aside let's move on to the actual purpose of this thread.
    • If you have questions feel free to ask.
    • If you have suggestions we are more than welcome it.
    • If there is problem, reporting is always an option.
    • If you have grievances over tags, definitions or matters relating to them, post them here.

    1 - TAGS ON NU
The purpose of the tag is to provide both a quick summary of what might happen in the novel and to provide a search function for users to find similar novels. With a combination of tags in the Series Finder, one can find their desired novel.

1.1 The Best Way You Can Help
You don't need to be part of the cleaning staff to feel useful, all you need to do is maintain the tags of the novels you are currently reading. A mod is not all mighty, there are series we haven't read or touched upon. So when an existing tag is placed on a novel we haven't read, we are not 100% sure if it's a legitimate tag to use on said novel. Any help would be appreciated.

    2 - TAGS : GENERAL RULES

    1. Please refrain from adding/removing a tag if you're not sure of it. While anyone can make edits to the listed tags under the novel. This does not mean you have free reign to put/remove whatever tag on a novel. Ask yourself whether the tag fits the plot of the story before adding it.
      • Example: We have an existing tag Cats. But what is this? A cat appears once in the story. Is it time to put a Cat tag to the list? It would be perfectly fine if the cat stayed with them but it doesn't. So the cat tag should not be listed under said novel.

    2. Please refrain from mass-adding (or mass removing) tags to a novel. Especially if said novel;
      • already have a significant amount of tags,
      • barely started / or have very few releases

    3. Do not add tags that have similar meanings to existing tags. Just because a novel specifically says a certain term in their story does not mean it has the right to be its own term. As long as there is an existing term (which is similar to said term) in the database, it will use it as such.
      • Example: Mages/Wizards/Magicians are technically different terms. But what do they have in common? Magic. There is no need for more tags when this term exists.

    4. Do not create tags that would seem trivial. The number of tags a novel can have is endless, but only those with a significant purpose can be recognized as a tag.
      • Example: Main protagonist is left-handed. Very uncommon in novels to have the MC be left dominated but does it create any impact to the story? Does he get bullied because of it? Or he has a disadvantage for being left-handed in the story?

    5. Tags in regards to describing people should be gender neutral. Having both male/female tags for the same description is impractical. It would only lead to an increase of unneeded tags.

    6. Keep it simple. The tag needs to be something easy to understand and relevant. A long sentence as a tag, or rarely used words (that you would've need to google) would defeat the purpose of the tag. There is a reason as to why the tag definitions exist.

    7. Be SERIOUS. Be CIVIL. We are okay if there is a discussion on how to use a particular tag happens in this thread. If it's been decided that it has gone too far, then the discussion will continue on in a private conversation moderated by one or 2 mods.

    8. Do not use double quotes ( " ) It messes up pop up boxes when you hover a mouse over a tag. If possible please use single quotes ( ' ) or ( [ ) depending on the situation.

    9. Use the plural form when referring to a generic term. So we don't have cases where we have 2 tags that are basically the same, its just that one of the tags is singular.
      • Example: Child and Children. Even if there is more than one child the tag should be defaulted to Children because both refer to the same thing which is the act of raising and taking care of child/children.

4 - TAG DEFINITIONS ON NU

    4.1 What is Tag Definitions?
This is a feature on Novel Updates with descriptions that define the tag in regards to its use on Novel Updates as a tag.

    4.2 Why Tag Definitions?
To reduce tag abuse and misuse due to lack of knowledge on the meaning behind the tag.

4.3 When to do Tag Definitions?
We are currently trying to define all tags on Novel Updates. This is an on-going community effort.

4.4 How to do Tag Definitions?
These are some simple Dos and Don'ts that one can use as a guide to start doing definitions.

    DOs
    1. Simple but detailed. It should focus to the meaning of a tag and the context in which it is used on Novel Updates.
    2. Serious. If you only half-heartedly do the definition, refrain from proceeding.
    3. Neutral views. The definitions should be phrased suitable for public viewing.
    4. Good grasp of English.
    5. Examples of ACCEPTED definitions.
Adultery - Adultery refers to a person taking part in a sexual relationship with someone else, even though the person is married. This tag is typically to be used when the love interest of a male protagonist is married, but still takes part in sexual relationship with the protagonist. It can also be used when the male person is guilty.

Loli - This tag is to be used ONLY when either the protagonist, or one of the love interests of the protagonist is a loli. It is not recommended to use this tag for other characters, no matter how important their role is. A loli is a short girl who looks like a child, no matter how much her real age is.
    DON'Ts
    1. Only define the words in the tag without its relevance on Novel Updates as a tag. Everyone can use a search engine to find definitions.
    2. Insert opinions or notes. Post your grievance in this thread.
    3. Biased. If you can't stay neutral of a tag, do not define it.
    4. Use words that can be described as insults or swearing.
    5. Examples of REJECTED definitions.
Paranormal - Denoting events or phenomena such as telekinesis or clairvoyance that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding.
Reason: Google definition. Does not relate to its context on NU.

Sharing A Body - Protagonist or characters in the story shares a body.
Reason: Vague description. Just a repeat of the words in the tag.

Netorare - F*king NO, we don't need these stories.
Reason: Definitions should be neutral and not affected by personal views.

I think the first part of this tag definition is incorrect since there are other tags for this.
    Monster
Tag is to be used ONLY if the protagonist of the series is a Monster (definition may vary based on novel). If the series has multiple protagonists, only use this tag if being a Monster(s) is a prominent feature of one of them. Can ALSO be used if there being Monster(s) has a big impact on the story.

The lock is still there, but if you provide a valid point, the tag can still have their definition changed.

Can you highlight the parts you find troubling?

The lock is still there. We don't want a tag def war now, do we ;)

You can propose a substitute for definitions you have problems with.

If in need for a proper definition for the last of the rejected definitions, my best shot would be:

Netorare: either the protagonist or a love interest of the protagonist is brought to adultery or to the breaking of their relationship by a third party who "steals" them, often, but not always, by blackmailing rape; after some time the "stolen" part becomes willingly supportive of the new relationship or switches affections. If the protagonist is the one seizing other people's partners, use tag "Netori" instead.

I think that only the last part is correct

nice definition. However, it is too detailed, as in it is too strict. NU is all for flexible definitions because that is how creative writers can be. I think it will be better if you shorten it a bit.

Hmmmm actually don't we have non-human protagonist for that? Typically they are monsters if they are non-human

I am not quite sure what the mentioned other tags are. Can you give me some examples of tags that can be mistaken due to similar definition?
