I noticed that some Chinese Models set in Modern times have characters with siblings or characters with a huge family. Does the one child policy not apply to characters from novels?

One child policy only applied to poor people. Anyone in power could have more.

one child policy would end up with a massive amount of elderly people and very little people to take care of them / to keep society running.

The current China government now use two child policy.. Since it's society full with elderly and no one to take care of them..
Is the family in the story rich or poor?
Riches in China would go to foreign country for child birth since the rule only apply on Chinese citizens(dat baby)

I feel there is something wrong somewhere, feel free to correct y mistake

I believe it was also more strict in the cities than in the countryside, perhaps your MC was born outside of a big city.

In China's cities, the fines for having a second child can run up to 200,000 yuan (£20,000). The payment is intended to cover the schooling and healthcare costs of additional children.

However, wealthy parents are now either paying the fines outright, finding a way around them, or travelling to Hong Kong where no permit is needed, according to the government.

Between 2001 and 2008, nearly 78,000 babies were born in Hong Kong to parents registered as living on the mainland.

There have also been thousands of cases of government officials circumventing the policy in order to have more children.

Well as far as I've understood it there was a lot of groups that were allowed a second child even when it was officially a one-child policy, especially if the first child was female.
And since it was mainly enforced through fines rather than imprisonment it mean that you in practice could have many children if you could afford it.

This is the future of the world. Limit the population!

    Why?

If I have twenty four children and those twenty four children have sixty something children, my clan would be ruling the world in some generation.
This was also displayed in issth.

Jokes aside, on a serious note this is utter bullshit law.
You can educate people so they can understand the oconsequence of a higher population but you can't ban people from making babies. No sir, you can't.

If you do and this really happens. As it did, and still is somewhere some place. We will not be going ahywhere.

One of the biggest problems with 1 child, is that to carry the name of the family, find work, etc... the child needs to be male.
So lots of killing female firstborns.
This means there is a sever short supply of females in China right now.
One of the solutions I vaguely heard of, is china's government making agreements with surrounding countries to bring in buses of women for marriage.

LMAO. I know I'm soulless, but I wish they had kept at it for at least one more generation, so they'd really feel the pain. Now they need to import women, bwahah *wipes tear away*.

    Men could have prospective harems.

So one child every woman or one child every marriage then?

The way I see it with their lack of women, women will be the ones with harems of men, lmfao.

To answer the question tho - one child total. The guy better pick well. The other women in his harem will have the choice to stay for the financial benefit and the sex, or leave the harem to find another man in the overly abundant ocean of males they can already choose from, rofl.

The 1 child thing is it does not really cost anything on the first child but after that you just pay for the 2nd or more so the gov't would not care anymore. If gov't comes knocking cause you have more than 2 now you just pay for any after the 2. Also I heard they fked their population quite a bit by doing a 1 child policy for so long. Going to be a ton of old people in the future in China.
