Request Doing an ethnography about Novelupdates

Hi, I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me out on my research.

How does the community work?
How did it started?
What do you guys think about the website?
Any other stuff I might need or find interesting?

I’m really not good at doing this kind of thing, so im sorry

 

The community usually works the opposite way that your username does, don't feed the trolls.

 

This community works around the premise of we come here to read and exchange views on what we read, find new things to read, etc, and diverge into new topics from there. We all share the same trait of loving asian literature to some degree.

This particular website started with our lord and savior Tony, however the asian novel translation wave started at varying times (2003 and 2006 I think) with other sites whose names I just forgot. This website is like a Library, and a Sacred Land.

 

I see that your research is at a not so advanced stage... to say the least.

 

Ask a mod. Any mod. Parth has most of the rule book down on text. Tony knows the most of the coding and programming of the website. Shio and NomdePlume are active and nice. electromaster is mostly inactive. Westeller is a mascot(ad) mod now. runsing isn't a mod, but a NU staff member. OverFriendly is now a mod instead of a r̶e̶b̶e̶l̶ nuffian. Hmm, who else is there?

Edit: holyshin is a mod, but I don't know enough about them. remy911 is also a mod, but also no comment.

 

2003 was spcnet while 2006 by Baka by the last guardian.

People like novels. People need to keep track of novels. People like talking about novels. People like talking with other people who like novels.

Tony did it. Before that, you'll have to ask someone else.

It's really helpful for a specific purpose (Keeping track of novels). Not as useful as a database. People here are nice.
Any other stuff I might need or find interesting?
You could check out the Roleplaying Games section, they're pretty active. There are a lot of people here who try to write their own novels, as well as translators.

 

The project was just given today, and my professor is already asking for research nxt class :/

www.spcnet.tv/forums/ (Wuxia Translations section) was a big forum for the Chinese translations and still houses a lot of completely translated novels. For Chinese translations, it's as far back as I know of it.

Then came Ren Woxing who made WuxiaWorld which became the next big site to house translations and from there we got a multitude of other translation sites / groups.

https://www.reddit.com/r/LightNovels/ was at one point a place where all the updates could be found but I believe admins wanted to keep the scope to only "Light Novels" maybe or maybe not with a little emphasis on Japanese translations (still a bit vague to me, the whole debate)

Then came alternative update sites. My memories are getting hazy but I think there was a site I used before Novelupdates, I can't recall it at the moment though... I believe I switched over to Novelupdates shortly after because I noticed the devs here have put in a lot of work into the site to bring the readers extremely useful tools.

Then comes the Qidian story, which I'll skip, too hazardous.

If you actually want results you need better questions and to set up an actual questionnaire. This are some shitty research methods.
