Welcome to the NUF Garden Simulator
    [IMG]
    What is this?

This forum game is a semi-realistic gardening simulator. Plants grow in real-time, so it is a slow paced game that requires patience. Remember to check your plants, water them, and weed them on a regular basis otherwise they will die.

This is a community garden, meaning we all share the same space, tools, and money. You can join (or drop out) at any point and help take care of plants that anyone else has planted in the garden, but please do not be a nuisance.

    Garden Inventory

Please see our Wiki (link) for information about crops and the manual.

Currently, the only seeds this garden owns are:
If you use any seeds, please update the Inventory to reflect the current amount remaining.

    How to play

Our garden is made up of "Plots". One Plot is roughly equivalent to 1/1000th of an acre (4 square meters or 43 square feet).

Our official timezone is Japan time (GMT+9), and we follow the weather at Manchester, UK. The garden is located in a fantasy dimension though.

Every day, you can perform a maximum of ONE action on ONE plot. Currently available actions include:
    • Action: Clear land (note: must use 3 times to create a new Plot)
    • Action: Plow
    • Action: Fertilize (note: can be used on up to 2 Plots simultaneously, please update wiki inventory after using fertilizer)
    • Action: Plant (note: please update the wiki main page inventory after you consume seeds)
    • Action: Water (note: can be used on up to 3 Plots simultaneously)
    • Action: Weed (note: can be used on up to 2 Plots simultaneously)
    • Action: Prune
    • Action: Harvest
    • Action: Turn Compost
    • Action: Build (note: number of turns it takes to build something varies based on project)
Please copy-paste the garden status from the previous poster, and make your changes. You must include the date you performed an action since this game occurs in real time. See the example:

If you need help planting or maintaining a certain crop, go to the Wiki and look up your crop (example: Turnip). The “Instructions” section explains exactly what you have to do to grow a crop. If you use seeds or fertilizer, please update the Inventory with the remaining amount in the inventory.
    Advanced Manual
    Topic: Watering Crops and Rain
The wiki page for each crop says how frequently each individual type of plant should be watered.

You can water crops by using the "Water" Action (watering can). If you choose this action, you can water up to 3 Plots in one day.

If it has rained (>2mm) in Manchester UK, all the Plots in the garden are considered "Watered" for the day. Note that <2 mm of rainfall (e.g. "scattered showers") will not count as "rain" for this game. This link has a 10-day forecast of rainfall in Manchester. You can find the amount of rainfall on past days at this link.

For simplicity's sake, it is not possible to "over-water" crops in this game, so it is fine to use the watering can as much as you like......

Failing to water crops by the deadline (see wiki page for each crop), causes the final crop yield to decrease by 20% for each day you forget to water the plant.
    Topic: Weeds
The wiki page for each crop says how frequently each individual type of plant should be weeded.

You can weed Plots by using the "Weed" Action. If you choose this action, you can weed up to 2 Plots in one day.

Weeds grow on all Plots at a rate of 0.1 lbs per day. The number is important if you want to throw your weeds into the Composter (see Composting section). To calculate the amount of weeds you picked, calculate the number of days since the Plot has last been weeded/plowed and divide this number by 10. This is the lbs of weeds you have picked.

For example, if today is Apr-3, and Plot #1 was last weeded on Mar-31 (3 days ago), I am able to collect 0.3 lbs of weeds today. This link has a date calculator if you have trouble with dates.

Failing to weed crops by the deadline (see wiki page for each crop), causes the final crop yield to decrease by 5% for each day you forget to weed the plant.
    Topic: Bad Weather
Different crops are able to tolerate different kinds of bad weather. See the wiki for each individual crop.

We monitor the weather at Manchester, UK. This link has a 10-day forecast of weater in Manchester. You can find information about the weather on past days at this link. Pay attention to the temperature lows.

    Types of bad weather:
    • Light frost: −2 to 0 °C (28 to 32 °F)
    • Hard frost: Below -2 °C (28 °F)
    • Snow: Check weather
    • Hail: Check weather

Plots that have greenhouses built over them are immune to bad weather.

Each bad weather event causes the final crop yield to decrease by 50%.
    Topic: Soil quality
This game has a simplified soil quality system, where each plot either has: "Poor", "Fair", or "Good" soil.

Freshly cleared plots start with a soil quality of "Good". Soil quality declines one level every 4 months while a crop is planted on it. For example, if a crop was planted in April in "Good" soil, then by August, the soil will be "Fair".

Soil quality affects the yield of the crop. The quality of soil at the time of planting is used to calculate the total yield at harvest:
    • Good soil: +0% bonus to harvest yield
    • Fair soil: -10% penalty to harvest yield
    • Poor soil: -40% penalty to harvest yield

Soil quality can be improved by adding compost (see "Composting") to the soil before planting using the "Fertilize" Action. Add 5 cubic feet of compost to a Plot (~1.5" of depth) to raise the soil quality by one level. Add 10 cubic feet of compost to a Plot (~3" of depth) to raise soil quality by two levels.

Compost cannot be added to Plots after crops are planted.
    Topic: Fertilizer
Fertilizer is nutrients for crops that increase the yield at harvest. Every crop has different requirements for fertilizer (see Wiki page for each crop).

If the wiki instructions for applying fertilizer is followed correctly, the harvest yield will receive a bonus:
    • Fair Fertilizer Use: +20% bonus to harvest yield
    • Excellent Fertilizer Use: +33% bonus to harvest yield
"Excellent" fertilizer use means that the soil quality was "Good/Fair" at the time of planting, and that no steps were missed during the application of fertilizer.

"Fair" fertilizer use means that the soil quality was "Poor" at the time of planting, OR an attempt was made at applying fertilizer (but some steps may have been missed).
    Topic: Composting
Composting is the method of converting organic waste into fertile soil ("compost"). The amount of time it takes to convert organic waste into compost varies from 1 month - 1 year, depending on the equipment we have.

Each compost "pile" holds 810 lbs of organic waste and produces 27 bags of compost. Currently, since we are composting in plain "piles", it will take 1 year to convert waste to compost. The "pile" should be turned with the "Turn Compost" Action once per month.

The 1-year timer does not start until the pile is at least 75% full.

Adding material to the compost pile does not cost any action points, and can be done for free.
    • Food waste - Every NUF member can add 1 lb of food waste once per day.
    • Weeds - Weeds can be added to the composter (see "Weeds" section)
Compost can be purchased from the store for $50 per cubic yard (27 bags).
Topic: Purchasing Materials and Selling Crops
Since this game is a semi-realistic simulator, it is possible to purchase essentially anything you think is necessary for the garden. If you are able to find a link online selling it (preferably in USD), we are able to "purchase" it.

Shipping costs are free... because this is a magical garden. :blobpats:

To purchase something, find a link for what you wish to purchase and post in this thread. Please ping @lychee so we can discuss whether it's a good idea to buy it for the garden, and if it's approved, we'll add it to the inventory.

To gain money for the Garden, there are two ways:
    • Sell crops (see the wiki page for each crop -- the retail price per pound is set)
    • Donate nuffies to @Get Tony To Tease Parth Fund. For every 1000 nuffies you donate, the garden will gain $10. You must contact @lychee to redeem nuffies that you donate. If a NUF member doesn't redeem it, it isn't counted.
    Topic: Building and Construction
Since this game is a semi-realistic simulator, it is possible to build practically anything you want so long as we have the materials and tools for it.

If you wish to build something (e.g. a chicken coop), you must:
    • Find a guide online that explains in detail how to build it. If an online guide does not exist, you must somehow produce a blueprint that provides sufficient detail that you could actually build it in real life.
    • Acquire the exact materials you need to build it:
      • E.g. Lumber, nails, tools, with the quantities you need.
      • Provide links with prices for every item you require.
      • You can check and use anything from the Inventory on the wiki.
    • Calculate the total cost to buy the materials/tools required.
    • Calculate the number of "Actions" it would take to construct your project.
      • Each "Action" is about equivalent to about 1 hour of volunteer labor.
      • E.g. If you think it would take you 3 hours to build something, it would take 3 Actions (3 days) to complete your construction project.
Please post in this thread and discuss with @lychee and other gardeners before you start construction projects or buy materials... the garden only has limited money, and building things can be expensive too.

However, if you donate money to the Garden (see "Purchasing/Selling"), @lychee will probably be okay with it if you spent your own money (converted from nuffies) to build whatever you want.
Topic: How to get new seeds or crops
To get new crops, first you do your research on your proposed crop. Please see the Turnip (Purple Top) wiki page as an example.

    Required information includes:
    • Planting Dates: What seasons/dates can the plant be grown in?
    • Growth time: How many days does it take for the plant to grow?
    • Seed Bag Price: How much does it cost to buy seeds (find an actual link on Google)
    • Seed Used per Plot: How much seeds (in grams) do you need to plant in one "Plot"
    • Base Crop Yield: How many lbs of crop does one "Plot" produce?
    • Retail Price: How much can one lb of crop be sold for?
    • Growing Instructions:
      • Please convert the real-life growing instructions into "game actions".
      • How frequently do you need to water the crop?
      • How frequently do you need to weed the crop?
    • What kind of fertilizer should you use, and how should it be applied?
    • What kind of weather is bad for the plant?
    Keep in mind that:
    • 1 Plot = 1/1000th of an acre = 4 square meters = 43 square feet
    • The climate of this garden is about the same as the Manchester, UK
    • For "Seed Consumption", you can look up "Seed Rate" on google
    • Please provide references for all the information you collect
It sounds like a lot of work... but good luck! This is a somewhat realistic simulation though, so try your best to get somewhat realistic information.

After you have collected all your data, post in this thread, and if @lychee approves it, it will be added to the Wiki.

I created a Carrot page and bought 1 lb of seeds using $25, so now the community garden has $225.

If anybody wants to do research on another crop and make a wiki page for it, let me know.

The date advances whenever the first person announces it is a new date for them.

After the first person announces it is a new date, everyone else should follow along.

So basically, we're using SEA time.

so essentially as long as we sorta stick to one time zone, we'll have a 24 hour day or we'll have like at worse a 2 hour day and maybe even 28 hour days

Since that's the case, then maybe it's just easier to use Japan time (GMT+9) then.

That's... A lot of carrots. Maybe we should start by buying smaller amounts of seeds? since seeds vary in size amd weight and the same weight of lillium ... Bulbs? (My English is failing me here) or say, potatoes, is not the same amount of seeds as the same weight of tomato seeds.

I added a penalties section to the rules, so it describes what happens if plants aren't watered/weeded for a while.

I probably won't undo it now because I've already bought it, but it's a good point. T__T

I don't think we'll ever run out of turnip and carrot seeds...

On the other hand, the motivation for having money is so that we can buy seeds for other crops too... so long as somebody does research on what kinds of stats it should have and finds a link online for how much it costs.

It think it would be really fun if we could eventually get to a point where we can raise things like chickens and stuff... but that's probably getting ahead of ourselves...

Go ahead and advance it then!

Since it's spring right now, I sort of just googled spring crops.

Maybe it would be nice to find fast-growing crops because idk how long nuffians have patience for a long growing season.

Also I just happen to be in the greenhouse, and took a photo of these two... Uh... Planting boxes XD

Each of these has 2,5 square meters, so if you imagine them together you could gauge the approximate size of our plots ^_^
(Also if someone has better pics, please share).
