    Yo~

I had to do this teamwork activity today on some course and thought it would be interesting to share it with everyone. The situation is as follows:

You and your companions have just survived the crash of a small plane. Both the pilot and the co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is mid-January, and you are in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is 25 degrees below zero, and the night time temperature is 40 degrees below zero. There is snow on the ground, and the countryside is wooded with several creeks crisscrossing the area. The nearest town is 20 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for a business meeting. Your group of survivors managed to salvage the following items:

    • A ball of steel wool
    • A small axe
    • A loaded .45 caliber pistol
    • Can of Crisco shortening
    • Newspapers (one per person)
    • Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
    • Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
    • 20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas
    • A sectional air map made of plastic
    • One quart of 100-proof whiskey
    • A compass
    • Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)

List the above 12 items in order of importance for your survival.

Have fun~ and try not to google it for the answers.

    3. Shirt and Pants
    4. Canvas
    5. Axe

    7. Chocolate
    8. Pistol
    9. Crisco
    10. Newspaper
    11. Lighter
    12. Steel Wool
That distance could be travelled in a day (or two) so long as there are no injured, sick, old, or too young. I think a few able bodied people should set up camp to hunt and take care of the infirm while other able bodied people travel to get help / a vehicle.

I see what you're getting at but you're making the classic mistake people make in these situation. You shouldn't travel away from the plane right away~

Uhhh, off the top of my head:
    • Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
    • A small axe
    • Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
    • A ball of steel wool
    • Newspapers (one per person)
    • 20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas
    • One quart of 100-proof whiskey
    • Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
    • Can of Crisco shortening
    • A compass
    • A sectional air map made of plastic
    • A loaded .45 caliber pistol
Extra cloths to keep warm; then tools to start a fire (Axe is self-explanatory; Lighter for the spark & to light up wool/newspaper). After that is shelter stuff (Axe + Canvas), plus food and drink. Then path finding, and finally a ranged weapon.
-- Might use the wool to file some of the cut wood first though, if there's still time before night. Don't really need newspaper, but more fuel is always better.
-- Compass might be more useful too, as a magnet, but not sure.
-- Whiskey isn't all that important, cuz of the snow, but the bottle is, if you're going to travel.

Yeah, I read up on wilderness survival for fun once.

Whiskey might be important if anyone’s injured. Sanitizing wound (would burn!), anesthesia, or just to feel more warm/open sinuses.

    My boyfriend says
    1. Gun
The calmest and most rational person in an emergency situation should take the gun. Not for defense from the wild, but from the group. People will make irrational decisions under pressure, or so he says. We obviously think very differently which is kind of cool xD

You were close on some of them. Think you had the right idea but the wrong ones made your ordering go off. The right order is below~
I thought whisky would be more important but nope it wasn’t.
Wouldn’t the crazy ones go after the calm one for the gun then? Unless that person is a good shot I think they would waste the bullets. But yeah I do like the different thoughts you guys had.

Here’s the items in the correct order~

    1. Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
    2. A ball of steel wool
    3. Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
    4. Can of Crisco shortening
    5. 20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas
    6. A small axe
    7. Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
    8. Newspapers (one per person)
    9. A loaded .45 caliber pistol
    10. One quart of 100-proof whiskey
    11. A compass
    12. A sectional air map made of plastic

.... Shouldn't axe be higher, as it's used to get fuel for the fire, as well as material to make a shelter. You wouldn't want to stay in the plane, as it could explode. -- Guess you could use the cloths as fuel instead *shrug*

We were told that’s the order some survival expert decided on. I can’t remember the logic behind the choices though.

I see, also have a complaint on the clothes, since imo clothes = permanent, while fire = temporary. -- The fire could go out for any number of reasons, especially cuz it's snowing.

I suppose with how there’s snow and with the temp being so many degrees below 0 they would need fire real quick to stop themselves from freezing.

Maybe, but imo, should layer up on clothes first. *Shrug* Not an expert, so I'll keep the order in mind, just in case.

En, but it’s only useful for fire starting. Without something to burn it’s rather useless. That means the axe is just as important, although it would be possible to drag over a dried log. (You can burn them in half as opposed to cutting)
