He's a household name in China the same way Tolkien is in the US, I think, but his works are easier to produce on a budget than LOTR so they've been adapted to television several times over. I don't know if I'd say he's the reason, but he was definitely one of the early trailblazers back when fiction like that was published in weekly chapters in a newspaper.

Well I like cn but not wuxia ones. I got to this website when I was searching for novels similar to tales of gods and demons (it had like 19 chapters when I found it, searched for it because the 3 chapters of the manhwa came out). I bet there are also more people that don't know Jin yong on this site

It's sad to hear that Jin Yong has passed away, but he had lived a very full life and accomplished everything he set out to do and more. He has also left behind a literary legacy that would put just about everyone to shame so he's certainly not going to be forgotten. Jin Yong's books are one of the main reasons why I learned Chinese, and I'm still awed at some of what he wrote. R.I.P.

The last new book Jin Yong wrote was back in 1972, so I wasn't holding out any hope for anything new.

No and no. Jin Yong is both much more popular and more highly regarded than Tolkien is. The only writers that had the reach of Jin Yong are Agatha Christie and J.K. Rowling, but even they don't have the kind of influence that he has. Think of it this way, every Chinese wuxia, xianxia, xuanhuan, and historical writer out there reads Jin Yong and expects that their readers are familiar with the works. These are literally the most influential works in modern Chinese literature, and there's no real English-language equivalent to them.

As for tropes and story structure, that's on the later writers; not Jin Yong himself. He tried to do something different with each of his novels outside of the early couple. If anything, Jin Yong should be given credit for providing a strong foundation for subsequent writers to aspire to.

I don't know what you're referring to, but Huang Yi did die last year and you may be conflating the two.

    ^ he is correct.

every person interested in martial arts or wuxia grew up reading his works, even those outside of china/hk/asia/tw

all his novels took something from the past and he put wuxia in it and tons of modern issues (what they were facing when he wrote them, not 2010+ stuff)

the entire xianxia is spawned off wuxia as well and u can see snippets of JY wuxia system in all of their works.

JY was not only a writer, but also a media mogul. he started his own newspaper company and that was where he wrote and published his stories.

In China or nearby Asian country maybe, but in the west, I never heard of him even once.

I only compared him to J.R.R. Tolkien because Tolkien has the reputation of being the father of Western High Fantasy just like he has the reputation, as it seem to me, the reputation of being the father of Chinese High Fantasy like Wuxia, Xian, Xuanhuan, etc...

Is Tolkien the author who wrote hobbit? I know about him because I watch Hobbit before. Agatha Christie is famous for detectives stories right?

You have consumed Jin Yong's content without knowing.I can guarantee it.
You get two or more Jin Yong adaptations almost every single year on average for over 30 years. Even Tolkien cannot match that.
Just the way my first Korean film was a 1990 Dragon Ball knock off and I didnt know it was Korean or knew what Dragon Ball was at the time

My first exposure to Wuxia is a manhua adaptation of Demi Gods and Semi Devils by Tony Wong. The second one is Return of Condor Heroes that starred Andy Lau. Those were good times.

Demi Gods and Semi Devils style of multiple protagonists are almost never found in Xianxia except for Release that Witch and a few others. Funny how a western xianxia has more similarities with it than most of chinese xianxia...

Btw, I prefer Yang Guo to Guo Jing...
