I was reading this partial MXTX interview translation, and something caught my eye. https://bigbadredpanda.tumblr.com/post/181815947256/mxtx-interview I wonder what "partner" is intended to mean there - a person helping him with his plans/the Sect, or a cultivation partner? Has anyone heard anything more about the scrapped partner mentioned in that question? It did seem a little surprising/sad that Nie Huisang seemed to be handling everything by himself in the novel. I can see how him having some kind of important partner would fill in that gap and give him some support and/or assistance in his plotting. In a way it's unfortunate that that character was cut (because maybe they would've been interesting!), though the author is probably correct in thinking they would have made the situation messier. In Nie Huaisang's scenes, he's on his own (nameless underlings aside), pulling strings and acting his role like a pro, and it's really impressive. If there was an extra person involved, whether they were helping him or they were in the dark, maybe the extra interaction would be a distraction from NH's scheming skills. NH's role in the plot was pretty streamlined. Edit: Now I think about it...I'm guessing the scrapped person was probably a cultivation partner. It was unusual that out of the major sect leaders the only one married was Jin Guangyao, with Lan Xichen, Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang all being single. That said, in the novel itself, NH could in theory simply have a cultivation partner who's never been mentioned in the text.
