Shen Yuan (captain of the strongest team) looks exactly like Ming Xinghe (the dead friend), but he doesn't remember the MC, and states several times that he's not. Spoiler: MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD However, you find out at the end of the novel that Ming Xinghe didn't actually die from the car accident. It caused him to be brain-dead, but his mother happens to be a scientist that was involved in an experimental project that revitalizes the brain in such cases. She stole Ming Xinghe's body from the morgue and hooked him up to a machine that's basically a vast AI program that stimulates brain functions. However, it could only do so much. The mom then tries to introduce other brainwaves into the program to stabilize Ming Xinghe, which is how the whole game world comes about. The consciousnesses were added as "players", and Ming Xinghe is actually the game master that's controlling everything in the world. His main consciousness is the Abyss Demon that "created" the world of the game, but he was so bored of such an easy existence where he could have anything he wants that he split off a part and wiped its memory to pretend to be a "player". So Shen Yuan really doesn't have any memories of the MC or that he's actually the abyss demon.
Continuing from that something about if Shen Yuan ever had his memories back it’d be the end of that virtual world, fortunately our mc appeared in the game and saved the day, kinda.
ML is mc’s childhood friend Ming Xinghe. Shen Yuan is a part of Ming Xinghe who was split apart from him and allowed to to roam around without memories/ burdens.
I read it and finished it instead. MTL of course. Will still appreciate an explaination as the words sometimes get confusing.

Btw, it's HE -- I skipped ahead and MC, ML (his old childhood sweetheart), & Tang Mianmian are all alive. For this haunted fishing village house arc: -MC & TMM both get pushed into the well, believing they were chasing each other. MC finds what he believes to be ferryman's skull at the bottom and a mysterious key. After getting out, they both go to their assigned room to sleep...on the same bed. Because they only get one. LOL. -MC is one of those completionist/explorer type gamers lol...apparently he'll search every single nook and cranny. But in this case, the skull and key are completely accidental discoveries -the jade pendant that Yun family sent to Fang Lan falls out of MC's pocket, giving MC the chills because he doesn't remember picking it up maybe it's ML-lookalike ghost hubby shoving it in his clothes when they were in the coffin lololol -MC sleeps unusually well considering he has never had a decent night's rest since his friend died all those years ago. TMM had the worst night ever and even dreamed a baby was crying/walking all over his back. MC takes a look at his back and yeah... there are baby footprints all over. is hubby jealous -MC speculates the jade might be why he got to sleep well vs poor TMM -remember that BF & GF couple? well, uh. so the BF comes screaming out of the bridegroom's room (the one with the coffin) covered in blood and wants them to save GF. GF is dressed in red wedding clothes in the coffin and there's a deep cut in her stomach with organs all coming out. MC thinks that she tried to pull her own organs out...... -......GF's corpse stands up and tries to rip out her own BF's guts, wanting her baby back (GF had an abortion, you see, but it's also like how Fang Lan had a baby) -BF dashes away to gate and it miraculously opens! He dashes to the river they crossed and jumps in, but then he's set on fire like the other people who died. Then the river turns out to not be water, but instead full of burning corpses......specifically, of the villagers -paper doll!Fang Lan runs after them, MC trips over baby shoes (LOL), he thinks he's gonna die when Fang Lan's face is shoved in his but instead he gets a huge memory dump from her: she convinced her childhood sweetheart to elope with her, but he never showed up at their meeting place. She got caught by villagers, married to dead Yun groom, then got pregnant (I think she was raped by someone from Yun family? or something, not sure). But since the child wasn't from the dead groom as old lady thought, and since everyone thought she cheated on the dead groom with her old lover, they drowned her in the pig cage. Her resentment made her an evil spirit and she killed all the villagers and dug out her old lover's eyes (since he wasn't willing to look at her), etc. -the old player & TMM thought MC was dead for sure, but the paper doll from their perspective ran into MC and went 'through' him before becoming regular paper. MC shares his insights with them (he only tells TMM about the jade, which now has a crack in it) -they determine that they probably need to stop the wedding to finish the mission, but are also trying to find the door to match the key they picked up earlier. -one of the sisters picked up a baby's wooden drum toy and fell into pieces. Yuck. Then housekeeper announces beginning of wedding banquet and guests come in. One of them is a woman with a locked wooden box -- a match for the key! -uh, the woman tries to stab Fang Lan (she's not an NPC), MC opens the box she had, and it contains Fang Lan's letters to her sweetheart. BOSS is in rage mode because of the letters lol, so they scram. -creepy BOSS climbs out from the well ahead of them. MC manages to ward her off with the jade pendant (she's afraid of it). Meanwhile, he connects the dots -- the ferryman = Fang Lan's sweetheart. They hurriedly dig up the sweet heart's grave and find a headless body, an oar, and bamboo (not sure about this since MTL, but it's what he's referring to in his creepy song). They take the plant and run, after MC temporarily melts the BOSS with his jade pendant -so the sweetheart died before Fang Lan. Okayyyyyyy -oh wow lol. So the sweetheart wasn't scum -- he just happened to die (drowned somehow I think) before the meeting date, so he wasn't able to elope with her. So Fang Lan's resentment was all due to her sweetheart dying before her and not taking her with him. She also wants her child, but they give her the toy drum and she's reunited with her child. -system about to take them away after completing mission (D-rank) though Fang Lan isn't willing to let them go, but then somehow she starts screaming: 'He's here!" and system notifies them that they triggered an S-level hidden mission with ??? time restriction and everything ???. -old player freaking out over a D-level mission suddenly becoming S-level because WTFFFFFF ......I got strong vibes that MC's old sweetheart is S-level lol. More spoilers after I read more.
OKAYYYYYY So, uh. First off, S-level mission failed but isn't fatal. It also ended on this really interesting kiss scene between MC & the old sweetheart lookalike Yun master then fade to black. MC & TMM wake up in gaming pod things: it appears like MC & TMM are in the 'abyss' world along with a bunch of other players like them (of the horror games). Playing is mandatory, but the higher level the horror game is, the longer the rest period between games. There are three planes of reality: real, abyss, and some other one I can't remember the name of right now. But the goal of everyone is to try exiting the abyss world and re-enter the real world. No one's achieved it though. Generally speaking, if a player loses a game, they'll die. Like, for real. Or get trapped in that horror game, as MC & TMM later find out happened to some others. After exiting, MC sees the #1 horror game completion team and their team captain is Shen Yuan (another lookalike of his old sweetheart; so like him that he even yells his old friend's name). This guy's personality is completely opposite his friend's though, it's like an iceberg. Arc 2: Features a scary demonic European castle and a lot of puppets. The castle's owner is a crazy narcissistic guy who wants to revive a dead witch/demon he created from his own imagination. Ends with SY saving MC by taking in the demonic energy/residue in MC into himself. SY is comatose but wakes up when MC shows up and his team shooes MC away after he does his job of waking up their captain. Arc 3: Mandatory D-level mission that MC & TMM go on. It features a creepy circus/carnival with terrible, no-good games and rides. Also a clown. I hate clowns. After Arc 3, we find out SY went comatose again after MC left, so SY's team haul MC back to wake up their captain. Captain wakes up, but he's...amnesiac. Also has the mentality of a little kid. LOL. So he hugs onto SY and refuses to budge, calling his team 'bad people.' LOLOLOLOL. MC and TMM end up joining their super OP team because of SY being joined to MC practically at the hip. Arc 4: (I'm still reading this one) Features a Japanese ghost village, S-level mission. This one is funnier than the previous arc IMO. There's a scene where a creepy beautiful woman ghost preying on young men is stumped by MC choosing to ignore her and snuggle into the same sleeping bag as SY. And also a scene where OP SY rips out a mountain god/mountain monster's tails and punches out its teeth because it hurt MC. Huge spoiler about SY, since I skimmed ahead: Spoiler: SPOILERRRRRR SY is actually MC's childhood friend. I'm a bit fuzzy on this part since skipping ahead doesn't give context, but it's my impression that MC's childhood friend sorta split himself apart somehow so SY is one aspect of himself.
Arc 4 (continued): It turns out the mountain god (which was originally good) was corrupted by the sacrifices the villagers made and turned into an evil god. The OP Abyss demon (Lily Marian? Not sure how her name is translated) has been using them to gather demonic energy for some OP Abyss BOSS demon's revival. Arc 5: Ghost ship/cursed treasure arc. Arc 6: Primeval island where God's heart supposed to be found/secret to eternal life. But actually it has a lot of creepy plants, including creepy trees that are actually transformed people who eat other people. Arc 7: Getting God's sword and end of horror games. Arc 8: Aftermath I can't remember the exact sequence anymore, but SY actually dies to save MC at end of Arc 5. MC and the team go on a journey (Arc 6) to resurrect SY. That leads to a series of revelations about the big BOSS behind everything, culminating in the final reveal: The big BOSS = SY = Meng Xinghe (that 'dead' childhood friend of his) It turns out he never died all those years ago -- he was in a vegetative state, then his neurologist mother took him away and created this horror game 'treatment' to try to wake him up. Because an MMORPG is more stimulating to the brain than a regular single-player RPG, she kidnapped other people and hooked up their minds/dreams to the game as well. She also hooked him up to some kind of amnesia-inducing drug so he'd regularly 'forget' what was happening at intervals to keep the stimulation fresh. As ML admits, his mother was on to a great idea (saving vegetative people), just not the greatest application. ML kisses MC and kicks him out of the dream world after asking him to pull the plug on him (he's hooked up to a life-support machine), dosing him with the amnesiac so he'd forget about him. MC and other people in team return to their regular lives, saved by the police. However, MC remembers later and is really sad about ML until he sees him in a crowd and tracks him down. As it turns out, ML had enough will to live after all -- after getting unhooked from life support, he started breathing on his own. After recuperating for a bit, he convinces his mother to turn herself in (since that experiment of hers did kill people -- the people who 'died' in the game are pretty much brain dead for good). MC & ML enter this really sweet domestic life and shower dog food on everyone, they both become horror game live streamers. MC's mother is hinted to have an okay ending; she's probably secretly working with the government while in prison or something: a new MMORPG is released with a plot similar to the events in the horror game and MC & ML guess that it's geared towards saving vegetative people, though it's only advertised/released as a regular game.
