So I just wanna know, when youre reading a story with harem in it,do you actually enjoy its harem essence or just brush it off and took importance on the story's plot??

(I personally hate Harem genre cause it pains me reading those women and somehow disgust me(?))

Dont take any offence on whatever reply may appear here,we have our own taste like how you have your own ideal man/woman/both :3

I like Harem when there is genuine interaction going on between the Harem. If I see them all being ‘I’ll kiss up to the others for now but eventually he’ll/she’ll be all mine/they’ll never have him/her if they’re dead’ (yandere or extremely possessive if interpreted broadly) or they’re basically brain-dead dolls that do what the Harem’s love (usually the MC) wants them to do without a second thought.

Edit: Also it’s become a trend where sexual harassment is frequent in Harems (generally the male MC is the one doing the harassment) and the lovers will respond with one of three cliches:
1-brute violence without a second thought as to wether or not the MC did so on purpose or accidentally.
2-accepting it with either a happy tear filled smile that looks like they’ve been forced to smile after being raped/abused or they believe that the MC did so because he desires them (regardless of the MC’s actual intentions) and are genuinely happy that the MC desires them sexually/physically.
3-they scream for help or call local authorities whom either immediately take the girl’s side and deal with the MC (which is right sometimes but as a lot of the time it’s an accident it’s quite frustrating to watch the MC be essentially imprisoned and socially destroyed over an accident) or it’s the relatives of the person being harassed and some will support the sudden ‘relationship’ (generally FL’s family, namely the FL’s mother will do this) and others will be heavily against it (siscon siblings and doting fathers are on the top of this list).
    (Secret 4-IT’S A TRAP!!!)

tldr: Harems can be good but they’re too overpopulated with cringeworthy cliques...

No, I don't enjoyed it. My eyeballs would pop out from my socket if I read those, especially the lolies end up with a man whose age is above thirties wether it's physically or mentally. Whenever I see a 'harem' word in the genre and then polygamy in tags, I would certainly avoid it.

Wait ... the yaoi can also have harem.

Answering your question, I like two or three stories out there with that label :blobpeek:

The worst thing from harem manga/novel/anime is that they tend to have an open ending (yes, I'm talking about date a live)

The sad thing is most of the anime nowadays are all about harem and accidentally grope a boobs of a beauty then go duel with her then defeat her then she falls in love then some random 1k yo loli vampire appears.

Come on, give me more manga like ubel blatt or vinland saga. No harem no bullshit

    Edit :
Even if it has to be harem, at least make it as good as oregairu

Really depends. I have some harem stories I enjoy (such as Mushoku Tensei and Sevens), but in general, I completely avoid the harem tag; it's even filtered out for the main NU page for me.

I think for me, there has to be an actual reason for the harem to exist. Mushoku Tensei's harem ironically does not occur due to the MC's wishes (although when he was first reincarnated to the world, he did wish for one [later on, he becomes more of a monogamous guy]); it actually occurred primarily due to the girls' own advances (and some misunderstandings). I also felt that the girls falling in love was reasonable. (IIRC, there were POV chapters from their POV on their feelings. The scenarios under which they fell in love could definitely work for a female-oriented romance novel.) Moreover, the females themselves are fleshed out characters and don't feel like they're there just for the sake of being there.

In contrast, some other harems feel like Pokemon, but with girls. I don't like those types of harems and typically avoid those stories.

EDIT: I will say that I do enjoy reverse harems, but sometimes, if they feel like wish fulfillment, it's cringy and harder for me to read. Probably biased bc I'm female, and I might subconsciously relate to the female characters more than the male ones.

I like harem in theory, occasionally also in practice. Unfortunately, it rarely goes anywhere. In CN it's usually used just as an ego booster for an already arrogant MC, and in JN it just ends in lots of "romcom" in which I don't see the romance or the comedy.

However, there are two main reasons I would defend harem novels:

First, lots of supposedly non-harem novels still have tons of attractive members of the opposite sex admiring or even obviously falling for the MC, just to underscore how awesome they are. I do not like MCs pointlessly breaking hearts, just so the author can imagine themselves being popular. Second, if the story only has one love interest, and you don't like them, that ruins the novel right there.

My preference is the classic 3 girl harem. With 3 you're almost guarantied to like one of them, and the other 2 will grow on you once you get to know them. Unfortunately, not many authors have the self-control to keep it to 3.

I stop half way of this novel because I heard this was a polygamy. Someone said he ended with three girls(?). Not sure if its true. :blobpeek:

It is. Three girls. All of them are met fairly early on in childhood. Polygamy comes from somewhat misunderstanding.
Here's how they come into the harem in the order they are married:

First girl MC actually meets. They're childhood friends. At that point in time, MC was planning on training Sylvie to be his ideal wife. Seeing that Sylvie is way too dependent on the MC, the MC's parent sent him off (to be a home tutor for Eris).

Years later, when they're both adults, they meet at the magic academy. However, due to the shock from the large transportation event some years ago, Sylvie's hair has turned completely white. At the academy, Sylvie also adopts the name Fitts and dresses in an androgynous manner. She recognizes MC and has feelings for him from childhood. With the help her friends/allies (who she met after the transportation event), she gets MC to recognize her and have sexual intercourse with her. (She uses an aphrodisiac on both of them, but it seems to me that they were both reasonably willingly consenting.)

Roxy is the second girl MC meets storyline wise. She was MC' magic tutor. MC was too much of a genius, and it caused her to actually doubt herself after ending her tutelage with MC.

Years later, she went with MC's father (who IIRC, she had a crush on) to save MC's mother, who is trapped in a dungeon. Unfortunately, Roxy gets stuck in a trap in the dungeon and is stuck trying to survive in the dungeon. Eventually, MC joins the party to save his mother, and just as Roxy thinks she is going to die, MC saves her. When being saved, Roxy felt that MC looked a bit like his father and looked rather heroic, and she fell in love with him. Although she knew he was married, she tried to get together with MC anyway. (IIRC, she got him to have sexual intercourse with her. MC immediately contacted Sylvie afterward though IIRC.)

Eric is the third girl MC meets storyline wise. MC tutored her in magic and math IIRC. However, while he was being her home tutor, the large transportation event occurred, and MC and Eris are transported to the demon countient (? I think that's what it's called). MC is able to speak the language, and they end up partying with a demon who is fond of children. At first, Eris is rather weak and useless, but she eventually learns swordsmanship from the demon and becomes much stronger. When MC and Eris are able to return to their home continent, they have sexual intercourse, but the day after, Eris disappears, leaving a note saying that she doesn't believe that they are a match. Eris meant that she thought she wasn't good enough for MC, but MC interpreted as him not being good enough for Eris. Eris went to go train her swordsmanship at an isolated school (? sorta like a sect IIRC)

Years later, Eris sends MC as note when she believes that she has honed her skills enough. By this time, MC is married to both Sylvie and Roxy (and did not plan on marrying anyone else). The matter is discussed by Sylvie and Roxy, and they agree to let MC take Eris as a third wife.

The girls are all accepting of each other and understanding of each other's situation.

I felt that each girl had a reasonable amount of screentime and character growth.

What is a harem out of misunderstanding? :hmm::hmm:

Is it a case of 'since you are already here I'll keep you'?

Sometimes, the harem is a part of the world building and has significance, believe it or not. In that case, I usually find it interesting. If it's harem for an Asian novel, I just brush it off.

I like harem novels because mc will get all the girls and i don't have to be butt hurt about not choosing that girl or why its always first girl wins or blond girl wins. But in a way i just like harem novel in general it makes me happy. Tho I wish they would be more diverse and unique.
