Listening to burnout from government jobs to people working for private sectors, what do you think would be a good fit for you? Why?

Why wouldn't you work for you local government? Even if it is a office position? Or why would you work for your local government?

In my small town, with my degree I could earn a living wage working for the government. Not too low, not too high. It would be enough to pay the bills and have a little save; assuming that I have roommates. I can never grow rich nor would be able to support an unemployed spouse and children with the government job I am thinking of. But I also heard of big burn out rate. In this day and age, if you're an hourly worker, both partners have to work their butt off. If you're a supervisor/manager, you make good money somewhat--depending on your industry, but long work hours

The appeal of government work is the job security. You're damn hard to fire if you you don't like your work you move to a different depart.

I don't know about that. My local government had a big shift in members who had a personal vendetta against one of the employees and fired everyone since they couldn't directly manage the staff.

Posts like these should really give some more specific info about place and position. In my place "local government" job(like receptionist??) would be probably paid something like 1.5 minimal wage, which is probably enough to support 2 ppl living modestly and going on in-country vacation once every 2 years. (That's bad scenario, i didn't make any research, in good one, probably something like you described.)

So no... I would not work for my local government because I could probably earn more by spending one lowest wage paycheck to get forklift license and working with it in some private magazine.

@Edit2 Yeah, forklift example is just example, but look at any other "basic" job, and just look for that one step most people don't make to go from lowest wage to 2x lowest wage.
Magazine worker without this license works hella less than one with it, the same would probably work for even bartender in many countries.

@Edit Also... dunno, my true qualifications aside... lately i learned, that if you can google things proprely, and can create e-mail account in less than an hour, you're quite qualified work as IT guy in some office.

    @Edit3 Cause i had to:

But if it's about stablity... sure, why not.

The government is inefficient and incompetent as it is, putting me in such a system would be like throwing pearls before swine! Also, I can't deal with people so let me play with robots for the rest of my life in peace.

I made a career of working with local government later in life. I found it fulfilling, interesting and challenging work that paid well. However, it really depends on your contract and the particular place you are working in. So make sure you find out as much as you can before you sign up.

In New Zealand, after five years of working in Local Government you can get an extra weeks holidays a year with the option of taking that extra week as cash instead. In total you get five weeks holidays that way, plus any of the perks and connections you get from working in a Council. For example, you can get building inspectors to inspect the home you want to purchase for free in one council I worked for... You also get trained so your skills are never get rusty, making it easier to change departments or councils all together. XD

I know someone that works in corrections....and he gets eight weeks holidays a year and gets paid a ridiculous amount of money as well. But then, he technically goes to jail everyday so I guess they have to make it worth their while. He got trained for the job and has some mean skills.

I'm happy to talk to you about my experiences, good or bad, if you need some advice. :cookie:

I will not, because my country now had serious debt with others, becoming government's officer are going to add more burden to them.

You mean, according to the real world. In isekai novels, people are simply people. In reality, people are set up to chase dreams that would put them on a 9-5, if not 6-4, job. Everyone call it career, but honestly it’s not a career when you’re advancing up.

    What happened? Details?

Hey, America has a huge debt too.

Here is what I see, I am currently working for a big corporation. We employed 90% of our work force as seasonal. The 9% are full staff. 1% being managers and supervisors. According to the sneak and peek and my ears being the size of elephant ears, I can say the top 1% are trained constantly, while only 1% of the 9% are trained constantly; which are usually the IT guys. Leads are never trained. No document to prove that they have. I have seen document proving that IT and supervisor are indeed trained or corporation paid tuition to have supervisor continue education or obtain an education.

Regarding the training aspect, I think local government would not pay tuition fee for a degree you want just so you could change department or is unrelated to your department. Nowadays, in America employer would rather pick and choose from candidates who already have the degree and experience, then train someone.

I would love to get any advice I could. Last time, I chatted with a buddy who worked for the county—she said they were having a huge overturn! That left a very bad impression, but I am already aware that the local government definitely demands a lot from their workers.

Makes me wonder how the debt will ever be paid. The logic of the loan and pay with interest system is out of this world. How do you borrow one dollar and promise to return two dollars when only one dollar exist? It’s a total scam. This system would work in the current already running system. You borrow one dollar and go out to make two dollars. It’s possible because almost everybody has one dollar.

However here the shit of it. If I have one dollar and I exchange with you to get a service my dollar is gone. Now, I have to go out and work to get one dollar from someone else; which I will continue to do so, so I could exchange that one dollar again with you. However, if I borrow that one dollar with absolute guarantee that I will get my dollar, plus another back—I won’t have to work at all! But of course, in real life there is no absolute guarantee so borrowing out my $$ is risky. You know, the con man that came up with the money system is absolutely smart.

Oh you work in the US. Haha, the US just sucks when it comes to work/life balance. You study too hard, then work TOO HARD for the work you do like you should be grateful you got a job in the first place. >_> And don't get me started with health care. >_> I was a teaching assistant at Uni for a while and becoming a tenured professor is a sweet deal, but that's not what we are talking about....

Here in New Zealand you can enter into an agreement with your employer, they would consider your application for further training against what the council needs. It's more of a partnership and you are right they won't just train you to change your job....BUT if you are a really good employee they will consider how to keep you and tertiary training is an option. What also happens, is that you apply for a job that is going and you then might get transferred and then trained. I had a friend that worked as an Events Coordinator before becoming a Regulatory Officer. They trained her because she would have been perfect for job (attitude wise) and then entered into an agreement to do her tertiary qualification whilst working. I worked in Records Management, but had no formal training....I did have a degree in IT and English Literature and some other miscellaneous experience, but I had the right attitude so they trained me in Records Management.

The right attitude can open more doors than degrees/education. I wish I'd known that before I spent so much money and time educating myself, but then I wouldn't be who I am now without all those years of learning. \o/

Do you mind if I ask what kind of work you want to do in local government?

Can I get a reference to go work at your company? Hahaha. I’m joking, but I wish my future would be just as bright. I seriously feel I don’t wanna go work for my local county. Yea, I get the benefit is good—but you see my job right now is quite flexible for my situation. And goodness, my life and work balance works great!! If I move to the county, I don’t know if I could do the same. I feel the county would be more stricter, and since I would be starting as a new employee it could be a bad rep on my record. However, I got to do what I got to do. No worry until I get the offer, which I have fail multiple times. Hahaha. They were for other position that I don’t give a care for.

With my degree, I could act as a receptionist, determine eligibility, interview (need more professional training), paperwork, data entry, etc. I don’t have much hard skills, but rather a lot of soft skills that I could transfer over. I am looking to apply as an eligibility specialist assisting with gathering information to determine benefits for applicants. It’s not that I want to do this job, but my degree match well with this and it would be hard for me to go for other position as local county would not train. They make everyone take exam. If you don’t have the knowledge to pass the exam, good luck elsewhere.

Initially with my position in Human Resources shouldn’t be opened to me. But I just fit what they need. I’m not sure in term of attitude, but definitely my experience working with confidential information. I didn’t even apply for this position. You should have seen when I walked into the manager’s office and was offered a different position from the one I applied for. My jaw almost dropped. I would have the opportunity to further my career as an HR, but they are moving out of state.

It’s not that easy. I don’t wanna go where they are setting up the new plant. And moving out of state isn’t easy for my situation. I can’t just pack up and go. I have to consider my family, as I do pay a large portion of their household bills. I can’t leave them homeless and don’t have the finance to move everyone. I think I’m overthinking, but I am ready to move out of CA. I love my town, but I hate CA in general with their heavy tax and overpriced housing market.

It’s tough right now. I just moved house, so I’m stuck with a year lease in an overpriced rental market, while I don’t even know if I’ll have a job next year. my adventure has a lot of sharp rocks on the road. But there’s one good thing about this—I would miss this place for it’s large space and single home advantage, but goodbye to the rat and ant problems.

*nods* You have to consider the overall picture too. Unfortunately that is what life is all about. Money is not everything in life after all, that comes and goes...

Maybe for you it's a matter of putting out LOTS of applications for all sorts of things for a while? Flood the market with your CV's until something sticks. I'd say maybe retrain, but the US is a rats race when it comes to all that kind of thing... That is my home too, but living abroad gives you another perspective on our lives in the US...we could do so much better as a country...but...that is not for this conversation either and I'd go into politics. ^.^ I like NUF too much to go into politics. :sweating_profusely::sweating_profusely::sweating_profusely::sweating_profusely: It's my happy place. :blobmelt::blobmelt::blobmelt::blobmelt:

And I wouldn't just email your application out of no where, If I were you I'd call or walk in if I could. Unless you are applying for a job vacancy where they specify email only.

Yea. Tough. I really don’t want to be working for minimum wage. One employer offered me 12.50 because I have a degree. I asked for 10 cents more, and never heard back. Glad I didn’t listen to my desperation and accept the offer.
