    Hello everyone.
Now that one of the big sites like Wuxiaworld is now going into their weird and convoluted addwall/paywall. Their new system 50 free chapters before registration and ads before chapter. There is also that part where completed novels will be paywalled (without first 10%) and at least one novel for free in 4 month rotation.
My question is about how is it going with NU rules about paywalls and if they should be removed from NU?

Can I compare it to Qidian now? Are the fanboys still gonna pretend to be better than everyone else?

Well, if only completed novels would be paywalled, why would you go and remove them from NU? I mean, NU is Novel Updates. You cannot really update a complete novel.

Non-registered 'guest' visitors will be able to read up to 50 chapters before being prompted to register and/or login.

Here's the relevant quote for anyone asking.
Actually, this is slightly worse than Qidian in term of locked chapters in NU's rule. Webnovel allowed everyone to read 100 free chapters of EVERY novel but WW only 50 for ALL novels.

Novelupdate is for people to click the link to instantly go to the chapter to read. What's the point of having the link that won't let people read?

You can just delete the novel from NU once it is completed and paywalled.

...really? Webnovel has 100 free chapter and then you have to pay or wait for your daily dose of spirit stones. In WW, you just have to register, that is all. I fail to see how registering will empty your wallet.

I meant that, if compared with the NU no lock policy, WW is breaking the rule more than Webnovel.

    hey if i'm not wrong. . .
ain't it geared to the completed novels?
and not the newly translated once?
and if i remember, Qi pasted a wall on sub-par still not completed novels. . .

A lot of this depends on the execution, I'd say.
we know 50 chapters total before registering, how many after? How troublesome will the ads be, I can see myself just preloading chapters and muting the tab, easy peasy.

I do agree that the chapters past the first 10 % needs to either be removed or redirected to however that padlock symbol works (if it is still used), but the novel in its entirety can easily stay, both to say it exists, and that there are chapters you don't have to pay for.

Atleast WW will unlock one ore more completed novels fore some time before they lock them.
And QI have a paywalk on ongoing novels.

Well it's stil not a good change for the consumers.

It was all in the design...

Do you think qidian came out with its website out of the blue? I'm sure wuxiaworld handed them the blueprints.

WuxiaWorld's changes will, as I understand it, only affect completed novels. Novel Updates does not link to releases that are locked in any way - paywall or account registration. Going forward, I suspect we'll be listing only the first 50 chapters of their completed novels (only during free rotations? Is it the first 50, or any 50?), and tracking in-progress novels normally. The "adwall" is only a switch in how they display their regular ads, and shouldn't affect anything on our end. The main inconvenience on our side will be a loss in reading list functionality for completed novels. If you would still like to keep track of your progress for these novels on Novel Updates, you will probably need to learn to use manual reading lists, as you can see I do for some Qidian novels. (Link to my reading list is on the left).

Please keep in mind that some details of their system are still unclear to us and it's difficult to provide firm answers on how we'll be handling anything until their system is fully in place.
