I’m reading through a novel and I can’t help but see so many holes in the battles in the novel. So I was thinking what battle could the author have semi copied to make it more believable. So I’m asking everyone what defensive battle in history most stood out to you?

Battle of Thermopylae. It was the battle where the movie The 300 was set in. 7000 Greeks fought off 100,000-150,000 Persians, holding them back for too long that eventually led to Xerxes retreating to Persia after setting fire to Athens. People know this as the battle where 300 Spartans stood alone against the Persians.

But that wasn't true. 7000 Greek citizen army fought in the battle, but they had to retreat eventually after a massive 4000 men casualty. They left behind a rearguard force consisting of 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians, assisted by 900 helots and 400 Thebans. The movie was just made for cinematic shock, not actually historically correct.

The final battle of the Gaelic Wars, Caesar vs Vercingetorix.

Caesar builds a set of walls and a military camp outside the city surrounding it.

The Gaulish people comes to attack his camp and what does that Roman Madlad do? He builds another set of wall on the outside of the camp and is forced to fight on two fronts, with enemy inside and enemies outside.

Caesar manages to starve the city and obtains victory.

I hope it was clear and correct enough, it's been a while since the last time I read "De Bello Gallico", might bring it to the hospital for the post-surgery days.

    Trojan War.

    >_>

10 year siege and all that.

Also has the dumbest fall of a city title to it as well.

So both a long defensive war and dumbest fall ever.

The Belgians during the Second World War made the best defense ~
For the Napoleon attack undoubtedly the greatest empires of the time against a single empire, and a single defeat the last battle ~

The defense of Ethiopia against the Italian colonizer is not bad, one of the only African countries to have resisted a time ~

The battle of Catalan fields (451)
    Is really good too ~
    Attila (huns) vs German ~
    Roman Empire is dying~
But, they try an alliance with German like Franc, Wisigoth and some more and win against Attila~
(Biggest and powerst army in the world btw~)

It depends on the period, probably before JC of the ancient empires of Africa / Mesopotamia, to see asia and after globally all this located in Europe and mainly in Western Europe with (even if I am French being the most neutral possible) France in terms of war history ~

The defense was pretty good at the cost of a massacre of about 1/4 of a generation, to face the German at this time was complicated ~
