Forgotten Title Forgot the name of the novel

i read the book ages ago but essentially the mc’s father was a scientist or something like that, that experiment on human bodies and before disappearing or dying? He left a book for the MC that let him cultivate and control spectres and stuff?

Im pretty sure the setting was in a modern/ sci fi era
