Out of curiosity, which platform would you recommend an aspiring web novelist to use?

    • ScribbleHub is nice because of its connectivity with NUF, plus it has that lovely lovely built-in-glossary tab.
    • Wattpad is friendly and easy to use, a lot of female protag stories set in ancient China are popular there
    • RoyalRoad I've tried and enjoyed the detailed review system they have (all those star categories) but it seems like the readers favor LitRPG over other genres there
    • Fictionpress is....I dunno, a little obscure for me. I mean, there's so much stuff it's easy to get buried.
    • AO3 I think of fanfic rather than fiction

There's also options like dreamwidth and/or your own site (e.g. Wordpress). I think it's important to know what kind of audience your story will attract and find the site where most of them gather. For now I'm using the first two~

I see that the originals are getting more attention than the translated ones these days in Webnovel. The highest one I saw had around 27M reads/views. So just as an estimation, how much do such famous original authors get paid in Webnovel and other similar websites?

That's especially true with authors who are active in interacting with their audience.

AFAIK, webnovel author doesn't get a share of the income, unless they sign a contract, which they can be offered after hitting something like 200.000 words (I'm not to clear on the detail, so correct me if I'm wrong). But, what I've learned, after browsing the forums, is that the contract is TERRIBLE. I mean, it's the sign-your-soul-to-the-devil kind of contract. You lose your copyright, and webnovel can essentially replace you if they want. You should check up on that.

The reason most authors post their work on WN is to avoid fraudsters uploading their work in their name and to get more exposure, which it's good at. I mean, I LOVE WN as a reader, but as an author, I wouldn't touch it with a ten-yard stick if I could avoid it.

I know your post is supposed to be a serious one but I can't help laughing :LOL:. I was thinking of posting my story in webnovel but all these red signals are making me have a second thought now.

There are a ton of red flags with WN, and I suggest you just try to google "webnovel OR QI OR qidian OR inkstone author experience", and that will give you a small insight.

With that said, as long as you don't sign a contract you should be safe.

Edit: Oh, and don't use webnovels own forum. They've been known to remove posts that negatively reflect their image.

To be fair, WN's views are somehow extremely inflated, with every novel having millions of view like it's the hottest thing in the town.

    Yeah, its misleading.
Although pirate sites are taking original novel chapters from webnovel too
I recall one by an Indian dude, about a World Domination System that is very popular

That and reviews of stories tend to be high because I think they remove low starred reviews. Tried sifting through out of curiosity and all the reviews I saw from random stories were 5 stars.

Authors are allowed to delete negative reviews.
One lazy author created multiple articles and gave himself 5 star reviews

He was so lazy that all the reviews had the same words

He might have admitted he wrote the reviews as part of the reviews I think.
He also verbally abused anyone who didn't give a positive review

I think, at least with translations, that the native views are included as well to make things look more popular. Qidian is way bigger than any English site like Royal Road and Wattpad so it's a great way to make things look bigger. That and counting people who read one chapter before dropping as a view

Man that made be crack up, and the mere name of webnovel is enough to make me shed a tear. [T ^T]

Also a bit from my own personal experience :

Because you get exp from making a review, most people don't bother making a proper review of the story and it's pretty rare to find an actual review reflecting what the reader actually thinks because the author can just delete the reviews! Like hell I made a review of a story that the author had responded to saying "Thank you for your support".
(Note: I didn't give it a low score or a high one)

And a few weeks later, I find my review delete and the author making a review of their own saying "Any negative remarks toward my novel will be delete" and such.
(I double checked and I found they deleted their review and over half of the other reviews...)

That and Webnovels constant change in their currency makes me shake my head....I can't delete my novel. [QAQ] If it weren't for the fact the Novels I want to read are only translated on their platform, I wouldn't go near Webnovel!

This is coming a good while after your own post but...

I'd go with Scribblehub and RoyalRoad. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to upload on multiple sites, and plenty of people do. Some sites have userbases that favor certain kinds of novels, but if you try a few, you may find the one that works for you.
