I'm getting around to this late, but! From what I got through in MTL, the political situation is super complicated. In original story, MC was a baby-making donor of sorts so her brother and his lover could have their unrealistic BL romance (because seriously, sole male heir to throne being faithful and not producing an heir...?). And also MC isn't close with her older brother (the heir) and is actually closer to her step-brother. There are rumors in the capital that MC is going to take over the throne even if she intends nothing of the sort. Of course, our MC refuses to do this so easily, though she does look around and try to date...but it always fails lol. In this BL world, like 90% of the guys in the city are gay and the only non-gays come from the countryside (and usually they've got girlfriends). Eventually, MC picks up a knight escort guy who's famous for being a demon on the battlefield. She's not even hoping to get a date by this time. XD But of course, this is the guy who seems to have the best shot at being ML so far. He and MC even end up wearing matching couple clothes......XDDD

I tried reading the raws using google translate + my very little japanese knowledge, so I can't say that my "spoilers" are going to be 100% accurate also I haven't finished reading them, because as someone said before the political part of the story was quite complicated and I'm sure that there more than one thing I missed... Also the manga version is super cute!!! But well, some little things I could understand: 1) Octavia's current knight guard is named Clifford ""Ardington"" (Aruda--ton), he is probably the Male Lead... Probably. While she actually chose him at random, as most of her knights only serve her for about 3 months before they find a male lover and quit so she doesn't care at this point who takes the job, in fact she didn't know his name until Clifford and her younger brother met. It seems that Clifford is quite honored to be chosen as her guard and is loyal to her, even more than the king, he refers to her as his master. Apparently he is sorta infamous, as the "Ongarne Demon" or something like that... I'm not sure if Ongarne is the name of a city/territory or of a war that was called that. 2) Octavia gets along really well with her younger brother Alexis, she calls him Alex/Alec. When she goes to meet him at the fighting grounds (and also to see if she can get a man to be her "fake lover"), because he acts surprised when seeing Clifford, Octavia concludes that Alex fell in love at first sight with Clifford, and while she laments that because she wanted her younger brother to marry a girl so that he also helps in the "heir providing" department, he declares that Clifford is "hers", he is her attendant and she can't give him to Alex... But that is not what happened, Alex is a bit of a sis-con, so he is suspicious of Clifford and orders him to present himself, but Cliff ignores his orders because he only obeys his master Octavia's orders... So Alex asks her what his name is, but Octavia doesn't freaking knowwww hahaha, and to save face she just orders Clifford to introduce himself to Alex xD haha. After giving his name, she concludes he is an adopted child of the """Ardington""" family because as far a she knows they only have daughters and he most likely has a commoner origin... Which could most probably mean that he is not gay, as most commoners aren't (though is mentioned that there are gay commoners as well), but she didn't stop to think about that... It seems that to Octavia all her knights are destined to leave her after finding a male lover. Alex does know about his reputation and is worried about his sister, but she says that she chose Clifford because she thought him worthy of the job and she is seemingly ok with him despite "knowing" about him, he accepts him as her knight... Extra info: Alex is super popular, most of his knights seem to fancy him and are mega jealous of Octavia, because Alex is cold and ruthless to them but is a cute happy puppy with his older sister... It may appear that Alex isn't gay or at least he doesn't enjoy being lusted on by his knights, and seeing as he is like just 14 and the knights are a few years older than him... well I can' truly blame him... His closest knights are two commoners who aren't gay, it seems that these two may have met Clifford at the war that made him infamous, they also have a good opinion on Octavia. 3) It seems that most of the nobles and upper class either marry a wife to produce heirs + political benefits or they marry their male lover and leave the heir-making to other relatives or take a consort/concubine to just make the heirs. There are some nobles who do marry a wife out of love, but it's not that common, the parents of a childhood friend of Octavia's brother Sirius are one of the few heterosexual marriages of love. The commoners mostly have hetero marriages but Alex's two knights do mention that there are/ they know of gay commoners. 4) Octavia mentions that the royal family is made up of the King, his male partner (whom she calls the "mother who raised her") who is an ex-merchant who looks younger than his actual age and her brothers and Octavia herself... So yeah, just like in the original novel Octavia was meant to just be the heir making machine for the main couple, the King's sisters did the same for their brother... Octavia's "older brother" Sirius is actually the son of the King's older sister who died after giving birth and her biological mother is the younger sister of the King (whom she meets a few times a year and she says that she loves being able to hug her, which I found really sweet and cute). Then there's Alexis their younger brother, who Octavia says that technically should be the "only one" to be considered, or actually has more of a right, to be heir as he is their Father biological son... I couldn't understand very well the story of his conception but it was something like this, it seems that the young lady of a Marquis Family(or a princess who married into a Marquis family) fell madly in love with the King, but the King just like Sirius is truly in love with his partner and isn't interested in women/cheating/having his own children so she drugged him and... well... she raped him once and she got pregnant and Alexis was born... Octavia mentions that what she did was a crime, but it wasn't very clear on it, like I don't know if because she gave birth to a prince she was "sorta forgiven" or her punishment was lessened, but the thing is that she and Alexis have never met and she seems to not being able to leave her family's territory... And that's why it seems that Alexis hasn't had much of a relationship with their father though he was raised in the castle and recognized as a prince. Octavia also mentions that being able to meet her biological mother is quite rare and is thanks to her "aunt's" good will and kindness that this is able to happen... Which I find kinda sad, well the whole "sisters are only there to make children for their brother's sake" is quite distasteful, because at first it just seems to be like NovelOctavia did that out of her own will to help her brother and Syl with the heirs issue, but after finding out about how her family is made up it's like it's expected of the female children in the royal family to just do that and who knows or cares if they did want to give up those children... Why couldn't they raise them alongside their husbands and then the King chooses who amongst his nephews/nieces is meant to be his successor?? I find it really unfair that the sisters are likely sent to marry whomever the royal family decides is best, then they have to give up their children to their brother so that he has heirs, meanwhile he gets to marry whomever he freaking wants and doesn't even take consorts to at least make his own freaking heirs... So the sisters are the only ones to give up on their desires as they fulfill their duties towards the royal house and the brothers DON'T and REFUSE to fulfill those duties but still get all the benefits. 5) The family dines together but in a very formal fashion, Octavia says that their "mother" (father's partner) always tries living up their meals with small chat and whatnot but she says that they mostly eat calmly and "distantly" from each other... She barely even talks with Alexis with whom she gets along really well. In one of those dinners, Sirius mentions that she has a lover to their father, and the ""he wants to support her""" and blah blah and they all start to say that they didn't know she had a lover already and they all want to meet him and blah blah, and then her father says that he wants to talk to her alone afterwards. 6) While talking to her father is that the story starts to hint more about the political side of things and less about the comedic side of the premise. Her father even asks her if she wants to be queen, which Octavia denies... and also why did she choose Clifford as her guard. It appears that the people thinking that she wants to be queen also got that idea because she chose Clifford, her father says that he is "poison", not only because of his "infamous" achievements but also because he comes from a certain country/territory that doesn't have a good relation with the Kingdom. Octavia says that she chose him because "poison" can also be "medicine" if you use it correctly... She is never going to admit that she chose him at random without caring to learn his name hahaha xD. Also Dad King wants to meet her lover... When she says that she needs time he starts getting a little suspicious and gives her two weeks to bring him and present him, he also says that she has been invited to a party, she decides to accept the invitation and hopes to find a good man to be her fake lover there xD 7) It seems people are targeting Syl, Sirius's lover. Some when caught say Octavia's name as the one who ordered them to do it. So it seems there is a conspiracy going on... Sirius stars investigating this alongside his childhood friend whose name I think was Derek. Sirius seems to really believe that Octavia is behind those attacks, he says that his only priority is to protect Syl... Derek does find it weird that he suspects Octavia that easily, but Sirius can't understand why Derek and even Syl think that Octavia couldn't be the mastermind... Derek says that while he is not close to Octavia, despite knowing her since childhood and the his father loves Octavia as his own daughter, he can't believe how it appears as if Sirius hates his own sister, Derek says that when they were children Sirius used to be really close to her and was a protective older brother, that when Derek teased Octavia Sirius would always end up beating him... Sirius says that he can't remember the past and he doesn't care, because he right now in the present hates his sister and he knows his sister hates him. Derek and him start to theorize that maybe that "so called lover" of hers may be her accomplice and maybe even her knights is her accomplice... At this point the political background starts to come up more and more and it's a bit confusing and hard to follow.... Well... Emm that's all... There're probably grammar mistakes which I apologize, english is not my first language, and there are probably things that may not be exactly as I interpreted them to be... Hopefully now that there's a manga adaptation we will be able to get more clear info and/or hopefully someone will decide to pick this novel up!!!
One thing I'm wondering is that can women get married to other women? Or is it like ancient rome where lesbians just didnt "exist"(aka there relationships weren't taken seriously)
To be honest I was also wondering that as I read the raws, but either I missed it or it didn't come up... I'm kinda thinking that it hasn't come up because the author doesn't care about it and/or because the setting is a BL novel so lesbian love isn't taken into account... It's quite possible that if it's mentioned it will be similar as how it was in Ancient Greece or Rome as you say, like if there are lesbians here they're just "gal pals" xD but who knows~
