Mao Ni's romances are crap and is Joy of Life worth watching

I watched Way of Choices drama adaptation. Given that I find Uyghur actresses very attractive, you would think I would be able to finish it, but no
Given that Gu li Nazar was an alumni from Xuan Yuan Sword 3, I tried my hardest but couldn't.
Mao Ni is a great author but having read Joy of Life, the romance was offputting.
    Made me drop the book.
I don't know about you but I prefer female characters that excite me.
These drama adaptations usually change a lot so maybe it might change the romance.
It is also easier to visualize a romance when it is visual.

    Ahh, yes, MERRY CHRISTMAS :blobparty::blobnobully::blobuwu::blobcozy:

You can find out more about the drama + novel here. The original novel is super super long (longer than GOT) with a twist....but yeah, play in the background and see what you think.

Great channel thanks but after seeing her review of Sword Dynasty, I think I will pass.
    We have very different tastes.
I enjoyed Sword Dynasty quite a lot.
It was confusing at first for me until I switched from viki to iQiyi English subtitles

I was thinking of watching this show after reading the book. What's so bad about the romance? Is there something wrong with the characters or is it more the scenarios?

The issue with Joy of Life is that the story took a big u turn. It was supposed to be a thriller/mystery and then he meets a girl and she becomes his priority.
Love at first sight is always a tough sell for me.
Negative points for her being sick and useless.

I watched the video review by the channel above but I won't be watching since the reviewer and I have very different tastes.
She rated Sword Dynasty pretty poorly which I enjoyed.
Also, it seems to be a BL channel. So I am not the target audience.
I prefer women with swords who do a lot of ass kicking

Thanks. That doesn't sound that it'd be a problem for me as long as the writing is decent.

Oh, and generally I think that Chinese language commentary is a lot better than English language ones, and the buzz for "Joy of Life" is pretty decent.

The older I am the more picky I have become.
No point in watching something without female leads that excite me.
    Critical acclaimed be damned.
One thing that I find sad is that Jin Yong's works are littered with integrating interesting side characters that could head off their own spin offs but we keep getting the same remakes.
Hong Kong cinema had the Dong Fong Bubai spin off films which were great.
A spin off on Li Mochou would make an interesting story.
The 2014 adaptation showed a lot of her back story

The ZTJ webnovel and the drama are vastly different. A lot of people have labelled the author as a sell-out as he essentially gave ZTJ an improper ending and just used it to get a drama adaption.
I'm not sure about the Joy of Life drama, though it does appear to be quite popular in China considering the webnovel's suddenly topping charts on qidian again.

I liked reading Joy of Life but the story turned into a love at first sight nonsense
Suddenly, a protagonist that plans everything throws everything by the wayside because he meets a girl
It would have been understandable if she was some awesome genius at martial arts or something
but it was just some sickly useless little girl
Given his age as a transmigrator, it made it another loli nonsense

Hmm, I'm kinda curious on your view about Mao Ni's other novel romance, Nightfall :blobpopcorn:

as I am an avid fan of his romance in his 2 novel (ZTJ and Nightfall)

    Nightfall's translation was pretty bad.

Since according to the drama, Nightfall's romance was what I was expecting in WDQK
So it was fine by me but the drama was a mess.

Way of Choices was too superfluous, I never got to the romance in either the novel or drama
